Thinking of a 993 c4s , need advice.
Hello guys
I presently have a 996 C2 and thinking of an 993 c4s turbo look. The choice is between that and the turbo 996. I just wanted to know of any known issues with the 993 that i am not aware of . Are the built proof ? are they known to fail like that famous 996 ims issues i worry about .
Please let me know anything you can possibly tell me as advice. Iam thinking about this change next week.
Any advice is appreciated.

I owned a 996, sold it went into a RSA crashed it and bought a 993 c2, love the 993, has plenty of power sounds much better and looks much better, not the same power and a bit more to handle aggressively than the 996, but I am glad to own it. Few cars are investments but at least the 993 is a car that should hold its value bett than the 996. so no worries buy one and see if it works for you, if not sell it before you put any money into it that you will not get back.

The 996 Turbo has the same engine block as the 993. There are no IMS issues with 996TT cars unlike the naturally aspirated 996 motors. They are pretty awesome cars with stupendous amount of power.
The 993 C4S (or any 993 for that matter) doesn't have many pitfalls but look for one that's been well maintained.
At the end of the day if I were you I'd drive both and see which one I like better. Oh wait, I already did

Yes, drive one and you'll know why the 993's are special.
But if you are into silly power then there's alot of potential with the 996 TT which is a different beast altogether. You'd be better off comparing a 993TT to a 996TT.

Not just drive it, but LOOK at them - just walk around a 996 Turbo and then a 993 wide body - that should be enough....
996 Turbo (as posted in the for-sale section - thanks WP0DD)
993 Wide Body (my turbo but same body on the 2S and 4S)
Which one would you buy??
Cheers,
Mike

Better get the shock paddles out! :-)
These are old shots - in the meanwhile, I have polished the entire car with Menzerna, did a whole pile of preventative and required maintenance, detailed the bottom side, polished and straightened out the exhaust tips, removed the front bumper and replaced the gaskets (since the idiots who did that before had no clue), spaced the rear wheels out, and a lot of hidden stuff - you get the drift. I love polishing a car the first time, and seeing all those haze marks disappear!
One of my favorite colors for sure - can't wait until it finally gets sunny to appreciate the metallics in the paint.

Own both, the 996 twin turbo is blow your mind fast!! The 993C4S is an absolute classic. The lines on the 993 are timeless. Recently drove 991 and Carrera 4 GTS. Both were extremely fast cars, however came to determination fast is relative, and you can only drive the limits of these cars on the track. So if you choose to track your car, and have the need for outrageous speed, then the twin turbo is the car. If you want a car that is iconic the 993C4S is the car.

Are you in it for the power or the driving experience? Decide what you want out of the car....fun, transportation, quiet, connection to the road, will you autocross it, do you carry (or care about) passengers, etc. As others suggest, sit in both. I did. The 996 plasticy interior killed it for me and the outside is ugly as hell, imho. however, it will be the nicer DD.
Search here for "known issues" or PPI (pre purchase inspection) to find some good (hours) of reading.
A final thought:
When you get out of the 996C2, do you always turn around to get a final look at her as you walk away?

This car is not a daily driver, race autocross, tracking not my thing nor will I want to do that. It is obvious that the 993 wide body is the nicest looking of the bunch. I want to change the 2 obvious choices are
Twin turbo 996
C4s 993
The turbo looks good and is super fast and modern looking. I actually like it more than the new models with all the vents. Not into that stuff.
C4s I can't stop looking at it. It's done right. Looks like a toy.
Now the twin turbo is reliable tough and sort of tank built.
Can we say the same for a 993 ?
Ian leaving the 996 for the reliability issues it has. I font want another problem car. I want a good investment and a solid car.
Are the 993 fast ? Can they be modified easy ?
Thank you again.

993s and 993TTs are very reliable... but remember they are 15+ years old now. The C4S (and all of the non-turbo 993s) are not exceptionally fast, but are exceptionally capable cars. The non-turbo 993s (just like the non-turbo 996s) are NOT easily modified for more power. It takes gobs of money to make any appreciable gains. A stock 993TT is pretty similar in performance to a stock 996TT. However, the 996TT can be modified for more power than a 993TT.
Reliability? a toss... the 996 is newer but has IMS and RMS issues. The 993 C4S can suffer from plugged-up SAI ports.
Looks? a no-brainer... 993 of any model
Power? 996 (particularly the 996TT) wins.
Have you driven a C4S? a 993TT?
