Default LED 3rd Brake Light

Who was the guy selling the kit to convert the third brake light to LED's? Did a quick search but came up with nothing.

You don't really need a kit - just buy the 12V T5 Red LED's and solder them in, in place of the bulbs. Make sure they are the right way round, and you are done. These LED's are available on ebay and a ton of other places, you'll get them all for less than $10.

12V T5 LED

These are what you need - take off the red plastic mount and trim down the wires to give the same height as the bulbs you will take out.

Are the LEDs a direct replacement, i.e. no resistors are needed?

Can LEDs and Bulbs be mixed? not that I would.

and finally, does anyone know off hand how many bulbs/LEDs are needed for a 96 CHML?

thinking this is a great project for the weekend.

The 12V T5 LEDs are a direct replacement - the resistor needed is built into one of the leads/legs of the LED. Not sure why you would bother to mix them, but they should work - you'll get different brightnesses for sure.

I think I needed 21 LEDs in total, off the top of my head. The whole job took less than 2 hours, from removing the light bar to having it back on and tested. A very pleasing, quick and easy DIY that went smoothly.

I think your referring to Warpig:

I bought a kit from him but switched to the red LED's.

Just yesterday I replaced my Center console light with LED's as well

You'll require 24 LED's

Interested in this as well. I like the plug & play aspect (or solder & play) w/ the eBay bulbs. My 3rd brake light never worked since I've owned the car so I'll be doing the pcar workshop fix soon anyway. Lots of soldering ahead.....

white ones emited low orange, and for green, color was grey
lights in central are orange and green, they filter the leds
