Unhappy Moisture problems everywhere

Hi,

I am having issues with moisture almost everywhere in my 993 Coupe. There is moisture in the luggage compartment, which I thought was due to three missing drain plugs in the floor pan. I replaced those, but no change. It may be the lid seal.

I also get a lot of condensation in the car as soon as the blower is switched on which makes me think it may be something to do with the blower/heater system. In the winter the rear window has been freezing up on the inside.

Is there any common point at which water may accumulate in the heating system?

The car is parked outdoors in a fairly wet climate, fortunately there are no signs of rust anywhere yet, but this moisture has become a worsening issue over the last few months.

Many thanks.
Gabriel

When you run your HVAC, do you have in on recirculate or does it bring in fresh air from the outside? I suspect you are recirculating your air, that's why it is freezing up on your windows (from respiration).

Your HVAC drain may also be blocked up, and this moisture may be making its way into your luggage area and not properly draining from the bottom of the car.

I'm not sure where the HVAC would drain, do you know where the drain is on it?

It's not set on recirculate, but I guess a servo could be stuck or something. How would I go about checking this?

Check the drain in the fuel filler door, as well, that can get water into the trunk or cabin and cause fogging.

Are you running your HVAC system on "defroster" for the front windshield?

A blond comes home and turns to her husband:

- Bill, I think there's water in my car's carburetor.
- How the hell do you know, you don't even know where the carburetor is on a car!
- Bill, I'm pretty sure.
- OK, I'll go look at it. Where's the damn car?
- Out back. In the pool.

Default Check for water

Pull up the carpet in the rear passenger foot wells to see if the foam insulation is waterlogged. If it is then you have to blow out the sunroof drains and replace the foam insulation. When parking outside I always found it helpful to park on an incline of some degree with the front of the car facing down hill. This will aid in the drainage in wet weather.

Use compressed air and blow out sunroof drains, see if that helps.

BTW, is there a similar drain for cabs? If so, where is it located, exactly?

Hi, Thanks for the replies. It's not the sunroof, I opened the zip took the headliner off and checked the tubes were connected today, then used the watering can test, all ok. I used a bass guitar string to make sure they weren't blocked. There was no moisture it there and the back (apart from the window condensation) seems pretty dry.

I'm concerned about the water getting into the trunk area in the rain, even if the car hasn't been driven. i must be related to the interior. I'll check the filler cap drain this afternoon. Failing than, I'm not sure where to go next.

In your case water getting into the trunk area is a given, the primary question is whether this is an isolated problem or the car is leaking elsewhere.

Since the trunk area is openly connected with the cabin the symptoms you're experiencing can indeed very well be caused by a leaking trunk lid (speaking from experience here;-)).

As others have suggested check your interior carpets/sound deadening for moisture to rule out / detect potential other leaks.

Good luck!

Gabriel,
This is a totally different direction.............any chance your battery could be boiling itself? Years ago my '87 Carrera's voltage regulator failed in the open position, overcharging the battery. I was not driving the car much at the time, but noticed every time I opened the front, it was wet just about everywhere. I did experiece some excessive fogging of the glass; however the HVAC system for a '87 and a 993 are different. Good luck tracking down the source.

Check your windshield washer nozzles. You should be able to look form the inside of the "boot'. I noticed on mine that you could see the sky through the drivers side one.

It sounds like your windshield seals are failing .. have you pulled them up and checked for rust damage in the trough area that the glass sits in? It's a common problem in the 993 and will cause everything you describe.
