OT: Skiing
As much as I hate the winter (cold and dark here in the north), I still just can't get enough of skiing, especially in deep powder snow.
I just got back this morning from a 7-day trip to Verbier, Switzerland. Last time I was there was about 10 years ago. Not much has changed since (Except for the skis). Plenty of skiing in the slopes, some obligatory ski routes and off piste + bathing in the sunshine and Alpine air. Last two days we got pounded by 40 inches of fresh powder. Steep walls and colours + fat skis + fresh powder = HEAVEN ON EARTH!!!
I will tell you it wast the best skiing I have had for years!!! I am truely exhausted and excited at the same time and already looking for a chance to go back there in a few weeks...
Any other skiing 993 owners here? (I think there is at least a few).
Obligatory pictures: (sorry no pictures taken with my camera during the powder sessions, as I was busy skiing the life out of me... =)

Glad you guys are getting some of it. Though I suppose we're finally getting a dusting out here these past few days.
Got one day in on Christmas with the board. All man made, and extremely limited terrain. Last season was one for the ages, and I finally got into some deep powder on the board. (That was my learn to board season.) Having stopped skiing for 6 years prior, my equipment is pretty out of date and I don't have anything that resembles a powder ski. Kinda like being in a 964 when most others are in 997s?

I think your 964 vs. 997 comparison is not far off; You can ski deep powder with both, it is just a completely different game with the fatter skis. Much easier to carry speed with the fatties.
I learned powder skiing with traditional narrow waist skis and I think it has given me a good basis to learn and improve on. The fat skis allow me to go a lot faster and they are much easier to control at speed. The skiing technique is also somewhat different. But yeah, you can get around with both...

For the past couple of years, I have only skied rentals. I just make a reservation for the pair I want early enough. This time I skied Salomon BBR's for the most of the time (which were btw great in the slopes and semi-ok off piste) and for the last day I got them fatties. Cost me 180Euros in total which for me is not worth carrying my own skis all the way from Finland...

At least I'm happy to have "964" era skis. Once in awhile you'll see a guy on the old stuff. More than I'm interested in stepping into again. Would hated to have had to say I was comparing a 997 to a '72 T with 185/70 CN36s and no stabilizer bars!

nice pics, glad you got some good turns.
I'm a full time skier now, but long ago I had to travel for skiing so I remember how great it is to catch a good storm or just good conditions.
and yes the fat and rockered skis have changed the sport. I don't even have skis less then 110 under foot.
my favorite shape is the volkl kuro, just too much fun.

Great shots - wish I was there with you. I was telemark racing yesterday at Caledon Ski Club here in Ontario - not exactly a ski Mecca but tons of fun all the same.
Happily I'm off to Big White in BC this coming Saturday for a full week of skiing. Super excited.
For those looking for tele skis- here is a good versatile option: http://www.genuineguidegear.com/gear/skis/spitfire
