Default California Smog

Hi,

How many of you Californians receive smog certification when renewing your 993 registration each year? It seems that in the past 6 years of owning my current 993 I have received a request to have my 993 subjected to yet another smog check.

Is it because the state of California is wise to the check engine issues so common on 993's? I find it hard to believe that a state in such turmoil (they cannot even balance a budget) is keen on insuring that 993 owners have their vehicles smogged every year...Or, is it just me and my car and for some reason I have been singled out?

Any input is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Damien

State of California requires a smog check every two years on all vehicles manufactured after 1975. It's definately not Porsche specific.

For some reason, they send me a request for Smog certificate every single year. My other cars are every other year if even that....so strange.

I just renewed my registration for 2011 and no Smog was required... I did have to do it last year.

My 993 is required a test every other year using a somg only test center, can't be a somg test and auto repair center...

The standard is every other year. I think the exception is if your car has been tagged as a "gross polluter", i.e. it failed beyond some criteria in a previous test, then the standard is altered.

Was a previous test way out of bounds?

Rufus has always easily passed California smog every two years. Once I was required to take him to a "Test-Only" station. I wonder if this was in response to one of those citizen's complaints to that 800 number to report smoggy cars. Some idiots may confuse Rufus' sweet sound with pollution... who knows.

Every other, on both. Some nut turned my 911 in to CARB the afternoon I took her out for the first run on the new motor. Got a letter, responded and I'm still every other year.

I'd inquire with DMV.

And note on those who get tagged with a "Test Only" requirement--you can go to a Gold Shield station as well. Happily, a friend operates one of those. No, I've never had to ask for a favor.

Test only selection is random. Several test only stations in NorCal are doing smogs for $50.00

Damien, you should try to get with the DMV. I would ask the DMV why your car is required to get a test every year when all other cars in California are only required to be tested every two years. It is a additional operation cost for your car. You should be able to know why you are required by the state for a yearly test....
