993 Cab Introduction and 996 Sport Seat/RSD install
 

After several years of lurking around Rennlist... I finished up my 996 Sport Seat and rear seat delete installation and thought I might add my thoughts and a few photos to the mix.
For anybody who is considering the 996 Hardback Sport Seats - there just isn't any real issues with these in a 993. I had heard about diminished leg and head room and sitting too high. I'm 6'3" and 225lb and I see no difference from the stock seats. They install very easily and I'm very happy with the look and feel. After removing the hardbacks, I filled the seat hook cavity and painted them in basecoat/clearcoat Arctic Silver. I installed Boxster heated seat switches in the emergency brake console and painted the console parts in Arctic Silver also. Looks like the factory might have done it to me. My wife loves the heated seats!
The RSD came out of a 964 coupe and had the center front plastic panel missing. I made up an aluminum filler panel and covered it all with new grey carpet. Since the coupes didn't have the cargo restaint bars - a couple shower door towel bars I bought off of eBay worked out perfect! I paid $600 for the seats and $600 for the almost complete RSD kit. I think for a couple low budget mods, I couldn't be more pleased.

How are switches held in the center console? I have Boxster sport seats in my 993 cab as well, looking for a good clean heat switch install.

I used just a vary small dab of silicone glue. Easy to remove and to clean off any excess.

Nice job! I am considering building a RSD for Scarlett - since no one will fit back there anymore anyways. I like the idea of the bars, great touch!

Attachment 575770Thanks for the kind words. My car is a '98 and Wimbeldon Green was an optional color that year - not a paint to match option. I bought the car with 24K miles about 3 years ago and I now have 29K miles on it.
The heated seat switches were done as follows: I first obtained a plastic switch cluster from a 996 dash that had provisions for three of the oval switches in a row that snap in from the back side. I cut the switch panel apart leaving two rectangular pieces - each with the tabs, etc, to allow the seat switch to still snap in. On the 993 emergency brake console - I cut out an exact size rectangular hole and glued the 996 switch pieces in flush. This plastic is type ABS so I just used ABS plumbing cement and reinforced the seams from behind with some scrap plastic. Then, I filled and sanded the top surface with some body filler before I primed and painted. It came out perfect and the switches look factory.

Aerocrosby, thanks a bunch for the explanation! I was leaning in the direction of using 996 batwing plate to hold the switches.
