Default Help! Lost 2nd, 4th and 6th gear...

My excellent mechanic (Robbie Provost @ Provost Motorsports in Bordentown, NJ) had my car up on the lift this morning and says it's not the linkage, and that I need a new tranny. The present transmission has 145.000 miles on it, with a new clutch about 5000 miles ago.

Anyone have a low-mileage manual transmission they want to part with? Any other suggestions?

All good (and especially money-saving) advice most welcome.

Thank you,
Reuben

Interesting, I had exactly the same issue while I was at Miller Motorsport Part a week or so ago, was on the track went to downshift to 2nd and got nothing, back to 3rd no issues, tried 4th same problem.

Came in off the track, had a local Porsche expert drive the car, could get it in some times and not others, parked the car, another expert drove the car and it was fine. Really couldn't work out what was going on, the consensus was it was potentially the clutch not fully disengaging in addition to worn out synchro's...

Reuben, I am not a pro by any stretch, but:

I was talking to a mechanic about shifting problems, and he said internal problems could make shifting difficult. He also pointed out that external problems like the coupler and other things along with engine / transmission mounts.
A shifted trans could cause problems, but just a wild guess. The shop should have already looked for that. I am not sure mounts would cause the 2/4/6 problem!

Good Luck!

I would not replace it.. Just get a competent mechanic to re-build it. Its cheaper and you end up with a "new" transmission in the end. Just make sure the mechanic knows what he is doing or send it out to an expert.

I'm betting on a broken shift fork. I had the same thing happen to me, shift fork cracked (you wont believe the crappy pot metal these things are made of) one of the pieces jammed up the whole mechanism.

... and if all else fails, I'm almost positive that RL'r Mongrelcat was offering up a low mileage transmission recently ... forgive me if I'm hallucinating ....

Thank you, all, so far for your input.

I will check out used transmissions. Does anyone have experience with Vertex's rebuilt boxes? they cost around $2200 and come with a one year guarantee. I have also seen a company called BMC&G (Brian Copans) that rebuilds our transmissions. Any other recommendations?

Meanwhile, driving with 1st, 3rd and 5th gear is an interesting challenge....

Reuben,
Copans is a top-notch outfit. I've taken a 993 transmission to him for a rebuild and the shop is amazing.

Before you go down that road, get your car in the air, remove the tunnel cover, and inspect your shift linkage for deteriorated ball cup inserts or other, obvious, issues.

I have stock gears and synchro's 2nd thru 6th, if you're interested (I re-geared my box in 2001 at 80k miles).

It's probably a broken shifter fork. Pretty common weak spot on these G50's. Easy repair. Joel Reiser in NY is a top gearbox guy. So is Copans, and Chris Cervelli.

BTW, it's very easy and cheap to strap a gearbox to a pallet and ship it to a competent rebuilder (that is, not Vertex).

Or place it in a cooler for shipment. I've had a few of them shipped my way for repair/rebuilding.

Might very well be a fork.

Thanks to Noah, Chris, Mike, Andreas and other for weighing in with your advice. I will follow up tomorrow, and pray that it is the fork and nothing too horrendous.

Cross Joel Reiser off that list he quit working on cars a few months back, a shame as he was one of the best 993 guys. He is always around and will give advice to anyone who cares to ask, you can contact him through PCA's tech Q&A section.
