993 Fuel Consumption

Have your fuel injectors Tested, Cleaned and Calibrated.
You could have dripping injectors, or bad spray pattern. Do this, and then see where you are with your consumption. By the way, when did you last change fuel filter and air filter. Gotta address the whole system!!!
By the way, I just LOVE my TPC Supercharger!!!!
mpg? emissions? power gain? YES!!!

Uh huh. Like I want to drop a Jackson each trip to or from my shop........
Even at "fun" pace on the track, a buck a mile adds up. I give a ten minute ride to a student (or mere bystander), and I've dropped $15 just on fuel.

...To be honest, I have been a bit dissapointed in the mileage on my C4S. I do mostly city driving, but I am not speeding from light to light and I barely crack 14mpg average. Regardless of the cost impact, I think this is a bit low.
I'm going to try a mini tune up, fludi changes, etc... to see if I can improve this slightly as I would expect to be closer to 16-18mpg in the same driving. I averaged 20-21 in my previous BMW driving the same route.

I spend most of my driving in Washington DC commuting traffic and I get between 13 - 16 MPG.
Out of curiosity, a couple months ago, I ran the car near the RPM redline for a full tank. I rarely got out of second gear and it pushed the MPG down to around 10.

yeah, I see about the same. I can get mid 20s on the fwy, but city driving really drags the mileage down to ~14.
I've done all the routine maintenance stuff and recently passed smog with flying colors. Overall the car is running great so I've just come to accept that 14mpg is about norm for the city with low-mid 20s for FWY. Just part of the ownership. I'm perfectly OK with this if its normal, I was just surprised initially at how low it actually was.
I do think there are a few contributing factors that account for relatively low mpg.
1) tires - I run Michelin PS2. While awesome in terms of grip, these certainly pull overall mpg down a bit on their own. A narrower/harder tire would certainly raise overall mpg a bit.
2) octane - we only get 91 octane here in CA and in the winter it's heavily oxygenated as a 'winter' blend, which further erodes efficiency.
3) widebody - increased drag compared to C2.
4) AWD - a bit more drivetrain loss compared to C2.
Granted I don't have any empirical evidence of the effect for each one of these, but I would venture to guess that these all add up to a few mpg hit in overall efficiency. The fact that C2 guys tend to get into upper teens overall seems to help justify it.

When I was using my 1997 993 C2 Tiptronic as my daily commuter my worst mpg according to the OBC was about 17. I have another vehicle for commuting during the week now.
A few weeks ago I reset the OBC and now after 300 + miles including a couple of trips through the mountains it's showing a little better than 20 mpg.
Ignition system servicing and tire pressure set as Leon993 indicates in his post above.

Out of curiosity I reset the fuel consumption computer before my last tank. 100% of my miles were in city streets, lots of stop/go traffic, but I nonetheless drove "aggressively" insofar as keeping my RPMs high and winding it out a bit when I could. I averaged 17.3 l/100km or 13.6mpg. I then refueled and have driven the last 100km as conservatively as humanly possible, but still in city streets w/ stop/go traffic and am now getting 15.1 l/100km or 15.6 mpg. Not great, haha.
As they say, "your mileage may vary"!
