We will be there Friday and Saturday. Staying at the Quality Inn on Munras Ave. in Monterey on Thursday night through Saturday night. We have to leave Sunday morning.

I will be there with my wife.

John & Joyce, we are staying in Carmel @ Best Western Bay View Inn. Thursday through Monday.

I'm in all 3 days. Might be volunteering to help park cars in corral in the mornings. Will be there with my brother Ed.

Mark from San Jose CA staying at the Comfort inn in Marina.

Will see you there; but I only booked Fri/Sat. May come down Thu too if I'm solo. As with the day trip down this Friday, won't be hard to miss a 4S Aerokit car with a couple of bikes up top.

(Joanne made a boo-boo--is "rac 911" up there the guys from Ruf Auto Center in Dallas showing up????)

And I guess I can get serious about Fri evening. Best choices I see are getting a room for dinner, but that probably limits us to about 20, or evening picnic in a park somewhere. But given that we'll be at the track, by the time everyone gets over to wherever, it will probably be pretty cold at sunset.

I'm parking in the corral and at the Monterey Days Inn Fri - Sun, looking forward to seeing everyone....Paul

Jumping back in on the Friday dinner thing. Have a lead on a restaurant owned by one of the Spec Miata racers, and comes highly recommended--La Mia Cucina in Pacific Grove. Upstairs room that can hold 20+. I'll pursue if there's interest.

Staying at Hilton Garden Inn Monterey

I think it would be nice to get people together for dinner either Friday or Saturday night. I am wondering though, would a dinner just be a get together of 993 people? I would think that there will be lots of other Rennlisters coming to Rennsport. I would think they might want to join in on the dinner which could swell the ranks to perhaps an unmanageable number for any particular restaurant. Thoughts anyone?

Having never been to track can I get some suggestions as to where to watch the action from? Best viewing spots?

Everywhere....Too many places to go from the Grandstands to the Cork-Screw. It's a nice track and you can see most all of it.

Here are my favorite areas to watch from:

Turns 8 & 8A = the cork screw. On the hill you can also see turn 9. If you're lucky and early you can get a spot close to the track or under the trees. Which ever suits you.

Turns 1 & 2 Andretti hair pin. The hill there is small. But plenty of action and over-taking there. Also it's right next to the where the Porsche corral (usually) is.

Turn 11 in the grand stands. You can see the cars coming down the hill, braking hard and getting set up for the straight away/ finish line.

You guys really are THE BEST. IF you can do this through out the day, it would save me a TON of time to do it myself. A running total. :)

Someone was saying earlier on in a different thread that if you show a PCA membership card you can get in, BUT some how that doesn't sound right to me. In the past the organizers had to know in advance how many cars, because the corral can only fit so many cars. Maybe someone knows the real answer.

You have a ton of choices in Monterey and I'm almost 100% sure some of the bigger ones (Marriott, Hyatt, DoubleTree) still have rooms available. Some of the smaller ones are booked like the one Best Western Park Crest on Munras that a lot of folks are staying at. If I were you, I'd just go thought the list and see who is staying where and that should point you to the nicer places in town.

Personally I love staying at the Mariposa Inn, but since this is a track weekend and we'll be out and about and only in the room to sleep and shower, where we stay isn't too important to us so we are at the Best Western Park Crest with a bunch of other P-car crazies. They way I look at it, we don't need to stay at a pricey hotel when we can't really enjoy the amenities. We can go there when it's a vacation to relax. I doubt I'm going to find the time for a Mani Pedi and massage!

I'm going to make every effort to join you, provided I'm not caught up with work while I'm at the track. :)

It's nearly 20 miles up the road. By the time we leave the track, clean up back at the hotel, make the drive, we're looking at a 7PM start to hang out there for a couple of hours.

I'll stop by there on the way home tomorrow night and check things out.

As much as I think the park/BBQ thing is appealing, pretty iffy to pull it off in mid-October. Unless the idea of standing around in sub-60F with a stiff breeze in the dark is appealing.

Thing about getting everyone together AT the track is that we'll all be spread out. Odds are I'll be mostly around the paddock with any of a dozen friends who are entered in everything from mundane Spec 911 to 7 figure prototypes.

Late to the party on this-been in Monterey for car week since last Weds(!!)- I'm all in for RR, with my 911. The 993 did the trip this last week.

I already suggested that somewhere and didn't really get but one answer that said, we'll be all over the place at the track so that might not be a good idea.

Post event would be harder than lunch... I would think... since most folks boogie out of Laguna Seca fast to make it back to the hotels for showers, shaves and then off to dinner.

Maybe a few more people will pipe up this time. More ideas please.

Ken (race911) was trying to get something together, but with our size group it won't be easy.

I still think Tarpy's is quite convenient after a day at LS. We had a 20-something group on the side porch a few years ago. It only takes commitment by attendees to show up.

Baja Cantina could work too on the back deck. Maybe a Paypal acct for $20 deposits or something to ensure headcount? If the group is big enough, we need some kind of safety net.

Me and my buddies coming out from Florida and we are up for some left coast food and drinks, just tell us where and when.

I'll go where ever you guys want to go, but just remember, this isn't a group of 20 we are talking about. We are already over 40 cars and most folks have 2 per car.... I LOVE Tarpy's, it's a historics weekend tradition, but parking there is atrocious. I can't think of a better word than atrocious. Two years ago it took us over a half hour of driving in circles to find a place to park. Jager finally spotted a place for us between a tree and an SUV and stood in it and waited for us to loop back one last time. We were in the MINI so we could fit. Had we been in the Porsche, I think we would have given up. A few of our group finally gave up and went elsewhere because they never did show up for dinner.

Whatever you guys decide will be fine by me, just remember we got a lot of folks and a lot of cars. I'm flying in so I'll have a rental. If I have to squeeze in next to a tree, so be it. :)




PS: Ed were you there with the Pelican guys? We were there sitting right next to them. I think the pelican guys got there about a half hour before the rennlist bunch.

Well, experience has shown that potential attendees tend to drop out at the end, so I may be a bit skeptical. Parking: I almost got in a fight over a space with some loser that tried to pull a fast one on Ruby two years ago. We prevailed.

We had dinner there last Saturday-it was spooky; not crowded like normal and even a few empty spots at 7:30pm. I couldn't figure it out....food was great, great server, nobody got sick....but you're right, parking can suck. Maybe the Cantina-they're certainly car friendly, and a fun quick drive over Laureles Grade.

Quick food review from last weeks stay:

Tarpy's: Good as usual but a bit loud and the tables were very close together
Cannery Row Brewing Company: Good bar type food, fast and relatively inexpensive
1833: Very cool house turned restaurant, semi expensive but very good food
Montrio Bistro: Good location and good food, limited menu for non sea food eaters

We'll definitely hit 1833 again in October...

They might....since they are car-centric, they may be more apt to handle large car groups, and we wouldn't have to deal with parking issues.

Can the restaurant accommodate more people should they show up? It is possible that there may be a lot more than 40 people. Most of the people responding to this thread are from the 993 forum. People from other forums might jump on the bandwagon as well.

That is why I thing that shooting for the back patio would be prudent, as it would allow some overflow. But, who in the heck has the time to organize a party for that many people, without underwriting sponsorship or pay in advance fixed menu? I think the idea here is to keep this somewhat informal.

I do know of a Porsche-related corporate entity or two that are considering such a event sponsored.

Passion Fish in Pacific Grove has two rooms for large groups; the smaller seats 25-30, the larger 50-60.
Great seafood and wine list. I do not know if they have availability. Any interest? (We are already booked there for friday dinner at 7pm.)

I heard the Quail folks aren't too happy that so many of their cars will be over at RR, making it hard to justify the cost, other than the aspect of it going to charity.

So what events are there going to be aside from the stuff at Laguna Seca? Who's going where?

I'm thinking dinner will be a spur of the moment thing. It's too hard to ask someone to get it together when so many people are involved and there is really no one who actually lives in town to do the leg work.


I'm going to be at the Beer garden on Saturday for lunch and I know of several others that will be there too. If you can make it, that would be great. We could try to have an impromptu gathering there. :) I know it won't work for everyone, but it might be our best bet at a 'gathering'.

If I had to guess, the Pelican event may be Sat night.

Hi guys. At this point, I have no idea what is going on. Due to lack of room at the track, and some personal conflicts, I will not be able to bring any cars to the actual Rennsport event. I will be there as a fully engaged "regular joe" just like everyone else (which is actually how I like it).

As for a Pelican event, there's nothing official planned right now, and I'm not sure there will be anything official. Friday night is set at the Cantina, Saturday is Seinfeld's show. I think I'll be meeting at Mission Ranch in Carmel on Saturday after the show, and people can meet up there. But so far, nothing official (or even unofficial) yet.

I am sure those of us not invited to the PCA party will come up with something to do together, even if it's get together in a parking lot to kick tires and eat pizza and swap stories. I might be kicking the tires on a rental Kia but that is better than not being there.

I am volunteering with PCA @ RS, which is being run by the regional club, and I got the invite email here in fly over land. I suspect that the email blast was limited to regions in the zone and anyone they had an email address for from the RS volunteer / invite list.

I am sure the more the merrier, especially if you bring your P-car [I'll be in a nondescript rental :grr: ]. I suspect RL's are invited w/o checking you PCA card at the door:bigbye:

16 CYLINDERS – After its success with the early Porsche 917 race cars, the company wanted to build a car with even more horsepower, and tested this 16-cylinder engine before settling on the twin-turbo 12-cylinder powerplant that eventually powered the Penske Porsche 917/30 driven by Mark Donohue. This one-off car, never shown in public before, made its world debut at Porsche Rennsport Reunion III in 2007 and will be sent from the Porsche Museum in Germany for Rennsport IV as well.July 29, 2011
With the rolling landscape and park benches, you might think you were in Bavaria, which is exactly what Porsche Cars North America intends with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock – located amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, October 14 – 16, 2011.

This area, located behind the media center (where the tire companies usually set up for a race weekend), will feature an authentic German biergarten as well as German food and a park atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break from the on-track activity and absorb the experience. But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have plenty of sports car activity as well, according to Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport.

“Besides the food and drink, our Park-in-the-Paddock will include a center stage where driver introductions and all the autograph sessions will take place and live music will be played, as well as the very popular model car display, photo opportunities with the CARS movie star Sally Carrera – maybe our most famous 911 – and a Porsche Sport Driving School activity center,” said Harling.

“We also hope to have a sneak showing of a future Porsche model in the Park, but it’s a little too early to be able to confirm its appearance,” Harling teased.

Other activities around the paddock are taking shape as well for the October event, according to Harling.

“Porsche Motorsports North America, headquartered in Santa Ana, Calif., will have a display not only to show its modern and vintage race car parts and service capabilities, but to encourage the many Porsche race car owners to take advantage of the company’s free technical advice offered to anyone who asks,” said Harling.

With the Porsche 911 being the featured race car of Rennsport IV, fans will also be able to view two 911 displays which help capture the history of this iconic sports car. The first is a special collection of the most significant 15 race cars in 911 history. Will you agree with the organizer’s choice as there have been hundreds of important 911 race cars? This display in the pit lane garages will surely spark a friendly debate, but, with more than 100 racing 911s in the paddock, everyone’s personal choices won’t be far away.

The other 911 display is being assembled by the Porsche Club of America, and proved to be very popular at Porsche Rennsport III at Daytona in 2007. In order to show the progression of the Porsche 911 model, the club has assembled one car from each year, starting in 1965, when the 911 first appeared in the U.S., until today’s 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

I tell you what. Lunch on Friday is long. Lets just do a meet and greet at the Biergarten. Say at Noon. The ONLY place we'll ALL be at is the track, so it's almost a no brainer. Want to meet other Rennie's? Lets do it at the track while the cars aren't ON the track. :) Whatcha say?

I used Google Maps to try and find a restaurant that appeared to have lots of parking. The El Torito restaurant, on Monterey Bay, appears to have lots of parking, some of which may be public parking where one has to pay.

If there is still any interest in getting together for dinner I will call them and find out more about the parking.

With the rolling landscape and park benches, you might think you were in Bavaria, which is exactly what Porsche Cars North America intends with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock – located amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, October 14 – 16, 2011.

This area, located behind the media center (where the tire companies usually set up for a race weekend), will feature an authentic German biergarten as well as German food and a park atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break from the on-track activity and absorb the experience. But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have plenty of sports car activity as well, according to Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport. :cheers:

New, Seventh-Generation Porsche 911 to Make North American Debut at Rennsport Reunion IV


First roll-out will be part of Porsche's celebration of a 48-year success story

ATLANTA, Sept. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- By the late 1950s it was obvious to Porsche that the 356, which was the company's sole product line since 1948, needed to be updated. Replacing it was necessary, yet perilous. Who knew that the eventual replacement for the 356, the 911, would surpass its predecessor in sales, longevity and glory? Or that it would be so fanatically cherished by its owners that Porsche hasn't been allowed to replace it. Or that the Company would be introducing its latest iteration all the way in 2011?

And, with Porsche Motorsport concentrating on its development of prototypes for Le Mans and elsewhere, there wasn't much initial effort by the factory for racing the 911, but it became the most successful race car in history, with hundreds of samples of its 48-year legacy to be displayed and raced at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, October 14 – 16, 2011, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey.

The surprise is that the new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera, the completely redesigned seventh-generation sports car icon, and a fore-bearer of race cars to come, will be on display for the first time in North America for Porsche enthusiasts to see up close at Rennsport Reunion IV.

"As the 911 race car and street car histories are completely intertwined, it is fitting to show our latest 911 at a motor racing extravaganza," said Bernd Harling, who is heading up Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV for event host Porsche Cars North America.

"Everyone will see that this newborn is truly a member of the family," said Harling.

From every angle it is unmistakably a 911, holding true to the Porsche 911 Carrera evolution, not revolution' design philosophy. The new car has a longer wheel base, but is both lower and lighter than its predecessor. With its two engine sizes, the new 911 Carrera is able to provide improved performance and handling, and even better fuel economy than before. The 911 Carrera is equipped with a 3.4-liter, 350hp six-cylinder boxer engine, while the Carrera S is fitted with a 3.8-liter, 400hp six-cylinder boxer powerplant, both with the optional PDK transmission available.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera celebrates its world premiere at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show next week, while the official North American debut will be held at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The first new 911 models will arrive in U.S. dealerships beginning in February of 2012.

It took a while for Porsche Motorsport to warm up to the 911 as a race car, but, as has happened several times in the company's history, the customers took the lead. Almost as soon as the 911 went into production, buyers were using it in hill climbs and autocrosses and Porsche itself started to produce lightweight and enhanced performance vehicles for their motorsports customers. In 1967, Porsche built 20 911 "R" models stripped interiors (no carpet, for instance), thin-skinned aluminum doors, fiberglass deck lids, taillights swiped from a Fiat, oversize carbs, a magnesium engine case, dual spark plug cylinder heads and much more. With about 210 horsepower on board, these race-ready, lightweight rockets were the start of the 911 racing legend.

Vic Elford, one of the most famous Porsche drivers in history, was one of the first to compete in the Porsche 911 at a high level, winning in the mid-'60s in England using a race with the very first demo model imported by the factory distributor, and later driving to victory in 1968 at the Monte Carlo Rally.

The Porsche 911 race car started to make noise in the U.S. when IMSA's Camel GT series started in 1970, with Brumos Racing and Hurley Haywood taking their 1970 Porsche 911S to its first championship in the 1972 season. Haywood and co-driver and Brumos co-owner Peter Gregg went on to win IMSA championships in 1973, 1974, and 1975.

After the Porsche 911 Carrera RS and RSR models won IMSA and Trans-Am championships in the mid-70s, the company introduced the radical Porsche 934 and 935 race cars – 911 silhouette bodied cars with big, twin-turbocharged engines. After being banned for a season from the Camel GT, they came back with a roar to become the cars to beat in the late '70s and early '80s.

The 1980s and early 90s were prime time for Porsche Motorsport's 956 and 962 prototype race cars, and the 911 took a bit of a back seat on the GT side to Porsche 924 and 944-based models.

Then, in 1997, Porsche introduced the GT class 911 GT2R at Le Mans where this 996-based water-cooled coupe promptly won its class, followed by the famous Porsche 911 GT1 which gave Porsche its last overall victory at Le Mans (1998).

The current generation of 911 race cars, initiated by the introduction of the Porsche 911 GT3 R in 1999, and promptly driven to the 1999 American Le Mans Series GT championship by Cort Wagner. The iteration of this family is the current Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, with Dick Barbour Racing, Alex Job Racing, and Flying Lizard Motorsports – all U.S.-based teams – leading Porsche to victories in U.S. sports car championships a well as Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans.

The other family of 911 race cars, in production since 1989, is the 911 GT3 Cup, which was developed for the Porsche Supercup and Carrera Cup one-marque series which take place around the globe. The latest version, the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which also competes in the American Le Mans Series, the IMSA GT3 challenge by Yokohama, SCCA World Challenge, and Rolex Grand-Am Sports Car Series, will have its own feature race during the Rennsport weekend.

GT3 Tek will be on vendors row with most of our Porsche products along with my 1995 993 with our 993RS kit installed as well as a GT3 Tek equipped 996 cab & 986 with our new GT3 Tek Spyder RS aero kit installed and also Fister Exhaust Stage III mufflers for the 993 which you can hear live and in person at the event. (much better than an online mp3 sound clip!)

We would love to have as many rennlisters as possible stop by and say hello to the GT3 Tek crew anytime Friday, Saturday or Sunday during normal event hours.

I just found out that the "parade laps" are all sold out. Dang. I didn't know how to sign up for those. Sigh.

Parade laps? Funny thing about Laguna is that it gets really stacked up. Figure out how to get to the track during an event where you'll gladly be given a ride. Better yet, drive. (Yeah, yeah, I constantly rag on Laguna for the neutered configuration and the absurdity of the sound levels we're subjected to. If you're dying to drive it though, you should.)

Is the track touring session the "parade lap"?

The Parade Lap in 2009 was a classic Cluster FCUK. The Monterey County Sheriff sent motor officers to escort the drivers. It was not as fun as the Fontana Parade Lap.

Parade Lap for the 50th Anniversary of Porsche in 1998 during the Historics was slow... not a crawl.... but slow. They are what they are, a Parade, not a race. During the PCA Parade in 1992 (?) we went out in smaller groups so there was room to really enjoy the track a wee bit better.

I don't think anyone can sign up for a parade lap thinking they will get to much of a speed at all. That's what DE's or Club races are for. :)

We managed to get a little bit of speed at RRIII at Daytona. They blocked off the banking but the long straight allowed some to wind it up.

The 2009 Parade Lap at Laguna was a lot of fun for the wife, kids and me.

If only because we were driving my 993 on one of the most famous race tracks in the World.

At one point, I think I got it up to about 85 mph in the main straight.

I don't expect that to happen this time (more cars).

We are all trying to meet up at the Beer Garden at noon on Friday. So when you see a bunch of folks wandering around in circles looking suspicious, just say HI and I bet it will be a Rennlister.

We got our tickets in the mail yesterday, US Air is warming up the plane, Avis is putting gas in rental car, hotel is cleaning out the morning fog from our room and us Floridians can't wait! This will make 4 out of 4 Rennsports attended, Woopie!!

Thank you Ed. :-) That was one of the test shots for my WOR calendar shot. Too bad the calendar's format is horizontal and not vertical, because I love the picture and do not know which one the photographer is going to choose. I gave him the rights to pick and choose for me.

Laguna Seca has sold 40,000 tickets for Rennsport. The turnout will be great !!

I don't post here much but welcome all Rennlisters to stop by the Wright Motorsport transporter. In addition to my RSR (shown in my avitar) Larry Schumacher, a multipler IMSA Champion, will have his very famous 993 GT-2 under the WM tent.

The sound of these cars is worth the price of admission, hope to see fellow Rennlsiters at the track !!

From the latest press release, there will be 800+ Porsches in attendance. At Daytona, the area is such that the mass of the cars attending was overly diluted. I can only imagine what 800+ P-cars will make the little areas of Monterey, Seaside, Marina, and Carmel look like. It should be awesome!

I have a selfish reason for wanting to do this.
I'll be driving up with my sons in a very freshly rebuilt car so traveling with others would give me some peace of mind in case the car dies in the middle of nowhere.

HWY 1 is open all the way from SLO to Carmel. There is one section where there is a traffic light because there is only one lane in that area.Winter Storm washed the other lane away.All tourist's are gone for the winter so traffic will not be an issue except for 800 Porsche's running around the Monterey Bay Area

Ill be there Fri + Sat and Quail on Sunday. Rented house in Carmel. InLaws are flying out from Chicago . Green Corral + Lap (open seat for lap day):bigbye:

Are there any groups making the drive from SoCal to RRIV?

I know the Early911s guys have a caravan planned (meeting in Santa Barbara at a restaurant at 11:30am Thursday), but I've checked around and haven't found anything else yet. (I'm going up Thursday.)

I have a room at the Wawona Thur night. Breakfast there is hard to beat. Mariposa Grove first thing Fri, then off to the track.

If anyone has an open seat for the parade laps there will be two Florida guys with their tumbs out hitch hiking a ride, you can pick them up they are kinda safe:)

I don't know about that we stayed at the Ahwanee and every meal there was hard to beat. :) Maybe it's the beauty of the place that makes everything so scrumptious.
