OT: MB Gwagon opinions needed
hi guys,
forgive the OT post,
Im considering getting a used MB G-500 or g55. Anyone have a good source for the best year to get and how they have changed over the past few years. Is there a Gwagon 'rennlist'? (i know they have a cult following)
Can i get your opinions with living with one as a basic suv .. the application would be about 85% around town/highway and 15% off road.
thanks

If you flip your numbers and do 15% city and 85% off road, you'll discover the G wagen is a pretty amazing off road vehicle. And nice on road too, of course. Richard Hammond once called the G55 the greatest vehicle on the planet, at home in the Sahara and also in Chelsea. He did a Top Gear piece on it a while back.
Maintenance and repair can be pretty steep $$, however.

I've heard to avoid the '02s, lots of electronic gremlins. 03s are better, 04 they seemed to get everything worked out.
The '05 G55 was the first supercharged year.
The pre MBUSA '01 and older are pretty simple, bullet proof....

the ride is bloody god awful...I mean terrible. The electronics suite is up to 2 generations behind benzes of similar years. The trunk/hatch areas have a tendency to rust. The gas mileage is bad.
But, the gwagen is plain cool as ****. Its got the same bank vault feel to the doors, and is very sturdy.
That said, I would never, and I mean ever, want to use one for a daily driver.

The OP didn't mention it as a daily driver. It's definitely more of a truck than the usual everyday SUV (which are not off road vehicles.) My SA has one and I've driven it around town. I didn't find it horrible at all. Compared to a Mercedes sedan or a soccer mom ML and GLK then yes, it's not the same. But it's also not even close to run-of the mill SUVs in the sense that it's a true off roader. I had a 4x4 pickup that was 'rough' compared to a sedan but I lived with it as a DD when I was a ski bum in Colorado, with no problem. It's all relative, I guess.
