Default gearshift click

97 993 with 50K miles. Suddenly the shifter seems looser and a metallic click especially when 1 to 2 and 3 to 4. No gear change or driveability problems. Any ideas and difficulty to repair? The clicking seems directly beneath the gearshift. Thanks in advance.

Nylon cup is falling apart. The next thing that will happen - front rod would fall down and you wouldn't be able to shift.

Replacing the cup is easy. Will take about an hour. I do have an extra front shift rod that is about a year old with fresh nylon cups. Or you can go to a short shifter with a new front rod.

+1 on the nylon bush - do it soon or you will be stranded.

There are two of these ball cups in the shifter guide tube. However, they are not listed as a separate part in the 993 parts listings, only as a much more expensive larger assembly--"angular joint, part #928-424-005-01, $87.00" and "shift rod, part #964 424 011 01, $134.25". They are listed separately as a 928 part, "clutch lever ball cup", part #928-116-145-03, $13.25 from Pelican. Just remove the guide tube, dig out the old ball cups from both ends, and press in the new ones, making sure they are all the way in so they reach bottom in their sockets. Reinstall the rod. It is easy to snap the ball cups back on the ball using a pair of Channel-Lock pliers.

Another tip is to tie a piece of safety wire around the front of the guide tube, so if the ball cup does fail, the rod can't drop off the joint.

Bobby, quick small correction:

964 424 011 01 is for Carrera 4
964 424 011 31 is for Carrera 2

I happen to have 964 424 011 31 with 28-424-005-01 and the nut that holds them together. Will sell for $75 if somebody needs it.
