Default Look What I Found In An Old Box...

Maybe a little OT for this forum, but I'm sure you F1 junkies will appreciate these. While doing some housecleaning, I ran across some 35mm slides in an old box. Turns out they're from my college days, when I attended the 1980, 81 & 82 Long Beach Grand Prix.

I pretty much forgot about these. In those days it was easy to crowd your way through access gates, roam the pits, garages and even sneak into the photographer's infield. At one point I was hanging out over the track while these beasts flashed by (I'm still looking for those pics). Somehow I don't think I'd have such access in Bernie's F1 of today.

So, I had a stack scanned and the old Ektachrome has held up pretty good after 30 years. Looks like I've got some new pictures to hang in my office!

Here's a few of the more interesting shots - enjoy!

Williams FW07 in tow from the garages to pit row:

Rene Arnoux's V6 Turbo Renault:

The Renault RE20 in the pits:

Ligier's on pit row:

Mario Andretti's V12 Alfa:

Giles Villenuve at speed on Ocean Blvd:

Niki Lauda's McLaren getting some front end work:

Soon to be World Champion for McLaren Niki Lauda just sitting around pit row:

And one of my favorites - Colin Chapman and future Champion Nigel Mansell having lunch just 6 feet away:

Outstanding!!! Haven't Googled but am assuming that the Williams/TAG/Saudia car was Alan Jones' steed, yes?

The McLarens were pretty crappy back in that period. IIRC, John Watson drove for McLaren?

Yes - I believe that was Jone's car. And yes, the McLaren's were more like farm machinery that year.

Here's a John Watson for ya:

And a few more...

Williams in the pits & aluminum monocoque:

Cosworth V8 powering the Williams. Note the hefty roll bar :

Lotus's carbon fiber monocoque:

Ferrari's V6 Turbo. I like the pit signage, spray paint on the concrete barrier:

That unreliable V6 Turbo:

. I believe Villeneuve said that the Ferrari was like driving "a Caddy with bad shockers".

Great stuff. Thanks.

I had forgotten Alfa had an F-1 car back then. (hey if Fiat let Ferrari and Alfa go at it, surely VWAG can let Porsche and Audi duke it out... )
