Default 993 vs 996

OK guys .... you there in the back, settle down. I currently have an '05 996 Targa. Nice car with no problems. However the 993 is tugging strongly. I find the style, size, air cooled, "real" Porsche bit enticing.

Now for an off the wall question. How does the 993 AC compare to the 996? Before you scoff, I am in West Texas and we have had temperatures in excess of 100 for the past 14 days. Yes at least it is a dry heat, relative humidity up to 4% today. So will I be semi comfortable or not?

Feel free to fire away about the spawn of Satan (996) compared to the second coming (993)

To paraphrase someone here, the 993 is more Sean Connery. The 996 is more Pierce Brosnan.

To further plagiarize, if you want to feel like you're going 100mph when you're actually doing 50mph, that's the 993. If you want to feel like you're doing 50mph when you're really doing 100mph, get the 996.

Both are fine machines. The 993 is just a little better.

P.S. here in sunny Los Angeles, my 993 A/C works just fine. And you know we get plenty of 100+ summer days here as well....

First, I like your attitude about "seeing the light" and converting to 993ism.

The a/c question is tough and I think a lot of it boils down to your own tolerance for heat (for which I have NONE). I live in Dallas so we have similar temps but higher humidity. For me, if I take mine out in this heat, it's only if I can park in a parking garage or something. Otherwise, the a/c has a difficult time keeping me cool. I have friends with 993s also in Dallas that haven't even used their a/c yet this summer.

Max - where are you in West Texas? I live in Lubbock and would be happy to let you drive in my 993 to see what you think.

Veblenesque - THANKS for the offer. I am down in Midland. My wife's grandchildren (I am of course much too young to have grandchildren) are here for the week. Not sure about my schedule. If things fall right I will take you up on your generous offer.

I've had my 97 C2 cab out recently in the 100+ temperatures here in Austin, and as long as the car hasn't been sitting out in the sun, the AC is holding its own on the 3 (out of 4) fan setting.

That being said, there's little doubt that the AC in the 996 is more efficient. But the 993 is okay. I don't think it matters what car you have if the car's been roasting outside in these temperatures, it'll never catch up.

What he said. I'm in NC with very high heat & humidity esp. now. my air blows ice cold and i have no problems. I have added a Cargraphic oil cooler next to my AC condensor in the left front fender with no problem.

The 993 Climate control is primitive but works on my car.

I live in Sydney Australia and we have humidity and heat, my 993 is black on black.
If you leave the car in the sun it gets hot, very hot, but the AC works well, no problems.
My car is a 97 model, so not sure if there were any changes over the years.

The AC in the 996 felt like it worked "faster," but not necessarily "better." Give it some more lead time, and it eventually cools the air. I am one of many that owned a 996, jumped to an exotic, and after a 2 year search, found my dream 993. No regrets.

I don't know if it is merely a question of whether the AC works. My 993 AC works fine and blows cold air. My issue is that I cannot get the air flow from the car-center position to blow on my body. So on REALLY hot days, it is not too cool. Literally.

The Cayman, OTOH, blows air exactly where I want it. I assume and Cayman and the 996 vents work similarly.

996 porsches are great for people who do not have the money to buy a 993 or 997 but want a quality DD 911.

Since you have a Targa, a regular 993's AC should be about on par with the Targa, but in general the 993's AC is not as good as the newer cars, but is the BEST system of the aircooled cars.

Find one locally, & take it for a drive to see if ti fits the bill. I have had mine over the mountains where it's over 100 a lot, & it worked fine for me & the wife. It did take a little time to cool off the car after it was sitting out in the hot sun.

Mine blows cold here in Dallas. I have the same issue as mentioned by others that the center vent won't adjust far enough to blow to the drivers seat. This makes a big difference regarding how cool you will feel.
