Default 993 Advice

I have had a 964 since 96, and really love it. However it was damaged in the May 22 Joplin, Mo tornado. It may be beyond reasonable repair. While I know what to look for( and look out for ) in a 964, I really have no clue with a 993. What are some of the issues with this model, and the 95 vs, the 96 on 3.6 engine. Of course I will get a PPI, since this will be a long distance buy. Thanks in advance.

If you ask for 996 advise on this forum, you risk being roasted alive.

Since he is asking about 95 and 96 models with 3.6 engine, I think you could safely assume he means 993...

I think he's talking about the ultra-rare 996/993 hybrid model, in which the RMS, valve guides, and cylinder walls all competed with each other to fail first.

Hi Jeff,

Assuming you are referring to a 993, you really cannot go wrong with any of them as these are excellent cars. Their durability & reliability are well above average,....

The 996 cars OTOH, have some issues and I have some different advice on those automobiles.

Jeff,

I'll just assume you mistyped, and want to investigate a 993. While there are some differences between a 1995 (OBD I, non-varioram), and the 1996 and later models, my advice is that all are great cars, and you try to find one that suits you that is in great condition. You may want to do some reading about the differences in models and years, and see if those differences are important to you. All are terrific cars.

yes i meant 993. I have been chasing my tail since the tornado. I am an air cooled guy. Water cooled its just wrong. I am a retired surgeon who now has a clinic for the uninsured, or under insured. My office is OK, but over half of the offices in Joplin were taken out by the tornado. I have been stupid over worked, so I pray you will forgive me my transgression. Yea i would not think about a 996, there is a reason there so cheep. Some one told me something about the cams having trouble on the 96 on modles. Any truth to that?

You're probably thinking of soft valve guides which can clog the SAI (secondary air injector) and throw a CEL on the '96-'98 models. '95's have the same crappy guides but the OBDI is not sensitive enough to detect an SAI issue.
