Faded out wheel "crest caps"-Whats the best option?
 

I assume I just have to buy new ones, but wanted to see what other people have done for the same issue. Also, does anyone know the correct part number for them?

I have just gotten a really nice '96 C2 Cab that has 17" Cup II's and was delivered new with the colored factory shield in the center. They have faded which seems really common and wanted to see the best way to fix them.

If you decide to replace them, I might be interested in buying the old faded ones from you for a little project I want to undertake. PM me if you want to go that route.

The ones on my 964 are faded and I will be replacing them, I will let you know when I do, if you are still looking.

You might try some mild rubbing or polishing compound as the clear coat may have simply clouded over. I just did mine and with a little bit of polish, brought the colors back to new in appearance. You might check each to see if the adhesive is still holding them onto the cap. All four of mine either were loose or had fallen off. Simply score the plastic cap and the back of the metal badge with a utility knife and re-glue with JB-Weld. Good Luck.

When I had the hollow spokes on my car, I scrubbed the crested caps with the green, abrasive side of one of those little kitchen scruby sponges. It cleared them off to look like new. I then masked off the silver part of the cap and sprayed the crests with some rattle-can clear coat. They looked new and still do for that matter.

I replaced mine last year with hand painted colored caps from the factory. They were pricey but awesome...

I peeled the crests off mine, painted the rest of the cap, and stuck the crests back on.

Look great and match the red rims.

Try a search, someone did detail, removing the crest rubbing them down and then lacquering them to great effect on plastic caps, are your metal or plastic?

Mine look like doo-doo...Two have the clear coat chipped off, one doesn't fit well...I have hollow spoke wheels that need to be re-re-finished (I refinished them once and the primer failed in spots, resulting in several light yellow spots in the paint). I'm thinking of replacing the wheels. Can anyone estimate what a set of hollow spokes that need to be refinished would bring?

I did it a couple of times. I popped the emblems off, used a very light sandpaper(1000, iirc) to scuff them, and then resprayed a clear. Looked pretty good, and didn't take that long. Can't remember what I used to reattach them though.

I think the snow / moisture did them in.

I suspect google can help you with your questions; but didn't your ebay link already do so? Unless of course, you need OEM Porsche wheel caps, in order to feel "right" about your P-car.

I personally, would not care about the OEM aspect, especially if OEM's were $90-$120 a set!

Like with anything else, your price may vary depending on who/where you purchase.

I don't have a before shot, but these were worse than yours. I wet sanded them smooth, then clear coated them. Not perfect, but perfect for my track wheels.

How did you do it ? A good rotary buffer with Wet sandpaper 2500 grit ?
By hand ?
