Default Caster Eccentric...explain please

Ok, so I'm in the process of removing my Lower control arms.

Obviously I need to loosen the caster eccentric to get the arm to separate from the hub.

But I don't quite understand the purpose of the eccentric in the first place.

Do I need to keep the washer from turning with a 12mm allen?

I'm figuring I have to hold this thing somehow while loosening/tightening the bolt up top.

Is this accurate?

Thanks all.

oh its definitely been marked.

I'm more concerned about the tool necessary to remove.

I'm assuming its a 12mm allen socket...can anyone confirm?

Thanks

If I recall right, the allen slot is for adjusting the eccentric to get the right caster setting. Once marked you can just loosen the nut like any other bolt. Hope that helps.

I am pretty sure they are 10 mm allen head. Not positive, though, while sitting at work. When I took mine apart, I found that I did not even have to hold it with the allen socket. I just turned the nut on the other side and that was all it needed. For re-installing, this was not the case as you use the allen socket to hold it on your marks as you tighten. Hope this helps some.

The eccentric moves the bottom of the strut fore & aft as it is rotated, thereby establishing the desired caster angle: mark the position of the eccentric - not the Allan bolt or nut , and the previous caster can be restored ..... can,t recall if a 10 or 12mm hex is req'd.

The alternative is to leave the caster eccentric alone, and remove the ball joint stud from the hub carrier. It helps if one has a ball joint press - or knows the "two hammer" method.

I was able to break mine loose without the allen wrench and held it stable with a pair of channel lock pliers when I put it back together. I had no issues using this method/tool.

Yeah Eric, I wanted a socket too but if I remember right they only sold them up to 10mm, skipped 11-13, and started again at 14 through 18 or something like that! Oh well, it got the job done.

Quadcammer, if you are removing your arms to do the bushing mod I think you are really going to enjoy it. Very noticeable improvement in the handling of my car...
