Question 19" wheels?

I just bought a set of 997 crab wheels on the cheap.

They are 19x11 with a 67 offset. My current wheels ar 18x10 65. From what I can tell, they should fit. It looks like they only extend a half inch on each side.

I didnt realize that 997s has the same rear fenders as the non s. They don't get wide until 4s or turbo.

My concern is the tire height on the front.

Has anybody put 19's on yours and if so what tires?

If you're asking just for the fronts, and since all of our cars are the same there.....the 19X8.5 GT3 wheels that fell in my lap work just fine. I actually forget what tire size it is, but just look up what came standard on an '07 regular GT3.

On the car they'll go again later this week as the time for snow tires has passed. I hope. I actually used the air conditioning on the trip up to the slopes yesterday.

I have no idea, but I can tell you the GT3s are like installing four additional flywheels. Yeah, you get the look. Yeah, you sacrifice performance.

But does it really matter? Yesterday I had the "opportunity" to explore the edge of street performance............with the 205/235 studless ice and snows (in 70 degree weather, was on my way up skiing). Know what? I was shocked how well they worked.

The 997 crowd calls them lobster claws.

A 19 incher on a 993 is a little iffy. And I don't mean the fit. I mean the look. Some OEM 19s would look okay, but it's all about esthetics. Be prepared for a let down if it just doesn't look right.

Something else to consider--Porsche had to go back and reengineer the 997 suspensions after early testing with 19s literally destroyed the 996 suspensions. Although Porsche was trying to economize and retain the entire 996 suspension and use it again on the 997, the added weight and performance of the 19s forced a significant redesign internally. If you drive on 19s over time you should pay close attention to fastener torques as well as have some NDI done periodically on the suspension pieces (non destructive inspection). Something like the use of eddy currents can be used successfully to NDI your pieces periodically. This will reveal micro-cracks before the piece completely fails.

As those of us who drive 997s have learned, there is no place for a spare tire (and thus, none is provided). The real issue is where you put the take-off.

One of the better 19 inch tires out there today with excellent performance and wear characteristics is the Bridgestone RE050A. On my wheels, Carrera Sports (8.5 x 19 in front and 11.5 x 19 in back) I run 235/35-19 in front and 305/30 x 19 in back--the as-delivered factory setup.

Good luck! Keep us up to date!

On the passenger seat, and tell your wife you'll be back in a few with the other car............. (And this was with the OE 10X18 twist with a mere 285 mounted.)

Well... ummmm.... Ruf has used 19" wheels successfully on 993s for many years and many high speed applications. And while Ruf wheels are quite heavy, I have never heard of a suspension issue. The overall tire height of my 19" wheel set is virtually identical to the factory sized 18" tire set. I'm not sure that a 19" wheel/tire set must necessarily be heavier than an equivalent 18" (although mine are). So... if the overall tire height is about the same, and the weight of the wheel/tire is about the same... why would the suspension care if the wheels were 19" or 18"?

The 19s are considerably heavier. Considerably.

5 lbs. for the GT3s. I THINK it was 54 v. 49 for the 18X11 996 Turbo hollowspokes + 295/30 Hankook. (Stock Michelins with the GT3s.)

Anyway, even though I didn't post weight in this thread last year, here's what we were talking about when I first put them on my car: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=21505

+1. I had 19" Cargraphics "fall into my lap" as well. Beautiful wheels. Some felt they looked kind of big on the car I kind of liked them. The tipping point-my car def did not feel as nimble and handled more sluggishly over the hollow spokes. Got rid of them after 3 weeks. Not dissing your purchase-just relaying my experience.
