I try to make sure my spelling, grammar, and syntax all jibe so that what I write can be understood. But, I find that I am beginning to succumb to the "dumbed down" style of the Texting crowd. I no longer indent the first sentence of each paragraph.

Naturally, I picked up on it immediately.
The word "it's" does not need an apostrophe since "it" is never possessive.

...unless it's a contraction of 'it is'...

Of course. But in the context of the quoted text, "it's" was clearly being used as a possessive and not a contraction. "Only the hippest, and coolest recognize a new trend, or something well ahead of it is [sic] time" simply makes no sense if the intention was to contract "it" and "is".

I agree with the case you were correcting - the answer just seemed to indicate that 'its' would never have an apostrophe.

Now I'm just annoying myself
