I know it must be painful to part with such a special car. The car fax business doesn't really work as well for "high end" cars like Barney. If one had a $100,000 car and had a $15,000 accident it would be cheaper to fix out of pocket than suffer the depreciation a clouded car fax would likely cause. This may have happened in the case of Barney many years ago. Some of these reports don't even discriminate between a minor or major accident. My guess is the buyer of your car will have read many of your posts here on the list and know full well what a terrific car you have. Good luck......Chris

Based on the ugly car fax I think you should sell it to me for $25K
(gorgeous example of 993 artwork by the way - GLWS)

I am truly sorry for you.
When you mentioned the under hood sticker was missing I feared there must be a reason for it. Such a low mileage car should have had the sticker present.

Mike, don't beat yourself up! Carfax is notoriously slow and flaky sometimes. You gave honest info and you can rest assured that that's all that matters.

Honestly speaking, I think most cars of that age had been in some type of collision. Minor or major and how it was repaired is the real question. I would suggest taking it to a good body shop now and asking them to look it over. They'll tell you what's been repaired and what's been repainted. That is the info you can share with a potential customer.

PS. I don't think that dealership can possibly be made liable. They will claim a clean Carfax at the time and lack of any knowledge of any collision prior. There is no way, unfortunately, to prove that they had info to the contrary.

The bottom line is that it's a very nice car that I've always admired, including the color. You've been a great 'lister and very honest and open. Barney will sell and it'll sell well.

So, I might have to get a set of Arena Red 993s?

So in other words, they are useless!

I would get CarFax to show proof of Barney's damage...name of shop, invoice number, etc.

Doesn't CarFax come with some sort of guarantee?

And when you get down to it, unless you know the car (as in its parked next door), unless its the original owner, how can any subsequent owner tell you with absolute certainty if the car has been in an accident, driven in the winter, etc.

The fine print is probably longer.

I once read a TV reportage on-line about these CarFax and similar services. They came to the same conclusion.

Mike, what do they define as front-end damage...a bumper skin maybe?

Under good lighting, pull back the interior carpeting and inspect the front frame rails and apron area. Check the body joint caulking, etc.

From what I can see just looking at the car, under the carpet, at the bottom of the spare tire well is a little wrinkeled. Barely noticable. Other than that the frame rails on both sides are fine. THIS REALLY GETS ME !!!

If you check the thread for Scott's RB Cab, an employee of carfax identified himself and said he was willing to help clarify some title issues. I'd suggest sending him a PM; possibly it is a mistake or if not you should be able to get an explanation why the carfax that you looked at was clean.

Regarding the carfax "guarantee," at the very least you have to purchase a carfax report to even be eligible; if I understand correctly, you looked at an existing one. GLWS.

I have run a car fax on the car my self and it states, Air bag deploy, accident, frame damage back in 2002. Who ever repaired this car did a great job. To me, it's fine. I have owned this car since 2007 and have had NO issues at all with driveablity. What a dissapointment to me. Sorry guys, but the wind just came out of my sails.
