Question DME (ECU) - ignition final drive- confusion

'95 - 993
Streather's 993 companion page 203 calls it: "Double Ignition final drive unit" installed under the left seat and controlled by the DME (ECU).

Pelican shows an "Ignition control unit" 993-602-706-01-M14 for the '95.

Is the " ignition final drive unit" the same as Pelican's "Ignition control unit" ?

Also referred to as "Chip"?

Or ??

The ignition driver is NOT the chip: its the ignition amp that drives both coils and its found under the driver's seat close to the ECU.

See the bos that has Blue written on it? That is the Motronic DME, the 'chip' is socketed inside that box on a '95 993

If you look at Bill's pic closely, you can also see one of the ignition control units aft and port-side of the DME.

By the way, if you hook up an oscilloscope to the outputs in order to check it, per the factory workshop manual, you'll find that the manual screwed up one of the wire identifiers. FWIW.

Are there 2 ignition control units?
Streather page 203 only shows 1 calling it "Dual ignition final drive unit".
And Pelican indicates 1 as well.?

So, 1 or 2 ??

If 2, where is the other one?

Thx.

I wish Bentley would publish a Repair Manual for the 993 but a recent correspondence with Bentley indicates no plans for any Manual.

Sigh,....................The Bentley SC and Carrera Repair Manuals are sooooooooooooo helpful with pix and info, much better than the Steather 993 book, IMHO.

Plus Bentley has the electrical diagrams.

It's a rebranded Link system. Made / Marketed in Australia.

www.vi-pec.com

Lots of great features (similar to Motec) with some additional benefits, great price point and comes logging and a non terminated loom that are extra in most Motec's.

PM me if you want some additional details.....

No, just trying to familiarize myself with the system on the new to me 993.

Sigh,...............my 911 SC with CIS seems so much easier to work on.

The Streather book is nowhere near as helpful as the Bentley Repair Manuals, IMHO.

Is it just me?

For the guys into the tech stuff...

Porsche (PET) part number 993 602 706 00 is a Bosch Ignition Module, part number 0 227 100 200.

The Australian Bosch site which happens to be very informative shows the unit along with the pin-outs and specifications...

Bosch Ignition Modules

The unit also goes under PN: BM 325 on the WAI-Transpo site.

My Porsche-Bosch cross reference list is getting bigger.
