Good thing we never changed, huh?

I can sit back, chat on the cell phone, send text messages, all while sipping my latte while the car does all of the work for me.

Strange that this author speculates how floor-hinged pedals might decrease the chances of getting your mats stuck under the accelerator. Strikes me that floor-hinged pedals dramatically increase the chances of that. That's actually my only complaint with them.

In this months Excellence "Simple Actions" Chris Harris talks about Floor mounted pedals. He states the new GT3 R Hybrid race car will have floor mounted pedals.
"GT2-Class 997 GT3 RSR uses floor-mounted pedals working a pull-rod system. This was chosen because it offers greater accuracy and consistency for the brake servo."
"Pedals are funny things, mostly forgotten in the race for 0-60 times and insane engine outputs. They are, however, among the most important components fitted to a car -- after all, they are the control surfaces that determine how fast or slow the machine travels. But pedals can also help shape the character of a car in both subtle and obvious ways."

It's interesting to see how one engineering constraint (the undesirability of holes in floorpans) begets a design (dash hung pedals) that creates other issues (poor ergonomics and carpet mat problems). Lift the constraint, and the original design returns.
