the key question
I did a search and found a ton of info on keys but nothing on this specific question.
I just purchased a '96 993 and it came a flip key that is in the first 2 pics. i have an old from my old 996 that has a key/fob combo (shown in the last 2 pics). Can i reprogram this FOB and switch the metal parts and use the 996 key on the 993?

I don't know the answer, but it seems easy enough to just try programming it before you invest in a new key blank.
Can you even find a 993 key blank that fits the 996 fob? If you take a picture of the 996 key blank I might be able to tell if the 993 blank would work...
For programming Start here:

Having said that, I'd guess the odds are slim that it will work unless the FCC numbers on the back are exactly the same.
Good Luck.

I ended up doing a "half a loaf" of sorts.
I purchased the key "holder" (looks similar to your 996 key) from Sierra Madre and simply moved the key over there (there is a DIY I believe on Robin's site), then kept the fob (now sans "switchblade") on the ring to activate the immobilizer.
Not your total solution, but for me a good compromise over the more complex fixes offered in the DIY sites, and my key now has a cooler look with the Porsche crest.
