DIY Question - center rear reflector illumination

Dear Rennlisters,
I was wondering if anyone has attempted to illuminate the rear center reflector on their 993.

I understand that there are existing molded holes in the back not used in the USA for Euro fog lights.
Does anyone know what the parts are and where I can get them to use these holes to illuminate the pannel?
Has anyone tried another way to light the panels? Electroilluminecent tape, led strip or other method?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Andy :-)

I don't believe the fog light holes will work to illuminate the center. The rear fogs are at either side of the center and an internal divider separates them so the light won't bleed over. If you want the center to light you'll oprobably need to cut new holes in that section.

I personally like having the rear fogs occupied on the USA cars. (It's like the 959 then!) But to get the parts I would ordinarily go to the factory or a German dealer. Perhaps someone can jump in wiht a USA source.

Years ago there was a kit that would sort of illuminate the rear reflectors--but recall that they are not truly a light fixture which normally has depth and room for light bulbs. It looks sort of hokey to try just to light it up.

An idea I have would be to exploit modern day LED lights--perhaps you could string a couple of strands through there?

Andy-- Someone has. See RLer Floodj's "Any one try this yet?" thread.

BTW, thanks for validating the 100s of unique Porsche images saved to my hard drive  ...for moments like this:

I want to use the rear fogs as additional brake lights. I've tried to find the proper rear fog light sockets and it's the hardest thing! It was super easy to do on my RSA but on the 993 the design is different and there is a lot less room. If anyone have the part numbers and a source where I can get the sockets it will be much appreciated. Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:

guys,

From my NSX days a guy over at NSX prime designed and modify OEM tail lights, converting them from incandecent bulbs to full LED even doing center reflectors. I bet if a group of 993 owners were to show interest and someone is willing to put up an old damaged set of rear light he could design something for us.

The usual stuff, no affiliation.....

Dan: +1 ...as brake lights! I really liked ilko's 964 DIY.

Ilko-- Please consider breathing life back into your "how-to" hyperlink, currently devoid of Porsche contact (but life in the Catskills looks idyllic).

Thanks to ILKO, I did it too. I love that MOD!

Having an added brake light would be a great mod for those who have the third brake light setup (basket handle) and have thought about removing it.

Important pre-modification step for those with pre-owned Porsches: have someone else activate your brake lights for you / take a photo, etc.

You may be as thrilled as I was to realize I owe the previous owner big thanks for already doing this mod!

Andy: You might find something helpful in BobbyT's "Rear center reflector--unused bulb sockets?" thread.

Likewise, here's Robin Sun's "993 Rear Fog Lights" DIY.

Some part #s from it, but not the requested socket #s...

You will need to find a generic single element light bulb socket plug that will fit the rear len fog light opening. Neither Porsche or Hela sells the sockets by themselves, they want you to buy the whole *$%# rear lens. With help form Gert I found the generic wire from a Nissan dealer (The good guys?) The fit is not perfect and there are some minor modification needed before the sockets will fit, but this is not an item that you will be putting on and off all the time and once on it is fairly tight it is also water prove so it is good enough for me.

+1 on CL's comments. I used a silicone adhesive to keep them in the cut-outs. The adhesive can be easily removed to change bulbs when necessary. All-in-all, a pretty easy mod. My biggest issue was where to tap into the brake light wiring. Of course it looks sooooo much better on the Speedster!

The rear fogs as additional brake lights is a great idea. What I would really like to do is keep them operational as fogs, too. With the small tail lights on a 911, it is very nice to have that bit of extra visibility in rain or actual foggy conditions.

I have factory rear fogs and I've thought about doing it. I figured I'd need a big diode or something to stop power from back feeding through that fog lighting circuit. I guess I haven't wanted to do it all that badly, as they're still just what they were designed as.

Here's a simple wiring diagram you can use: http://s90139951.onlinehome.us/vw/re...moddiagram.jpg

I've done this to my old VW, it worked great.

Inspired by the 992 full rear deck lights I searched and found this old thread. I’m not really interested in doing this but it’s kinda cool. Anyone ever execute this or see it?

Bump to revive an old thread. I have a fairly modified 993 and I would love the mod in the picture above that illuminates the word Porsche. I think on a de-badged car it would look great and if anything, simply make it more visible at night.

Any idea who is doing this now?
