Default Question on salvage titles - don't worry, not my pcar

Is it difficult to get insurance for a car with a salvage title? Any knowledge out there on this topic?

Chuck W. is the man on this subject. I believe he's had a few salvaged cars, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe he'll chime in...?

I would check with your local DMV regarding the registration of a rebuilt vehicle too. Around here the difficulty is getting the car through the government vehicle registration inspection program. IIRC they want pics before and after repairs so showing up with a car already having been rebuilt will be an issue.

Pretty much all right here, for CA: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr13.htm

Interesting under Item 4 ("note")--CA doesn't recognize out-of-state salvage certifications. Wonder if that's been changed in the past few years. I'm sure in the old days we had more than one salvage title 911 roll through our hands from who-knows-where.

Call your insurance & ask. Some do & some don't. The biggie is if you are in a wreck with it, you will not get KBB back, but a reduced rate.

Getting a salvage car registered in CA requires a few hoops to go through but is not usually a big deal unless VIN numbers are missing off parts or messed with, then watch out. This is not really the OP's question though. I would expect each company to have their own policy on insurance, especially full coverage. I would certainly want to disclose it to prevent an ugly situation should a claim arise.

I built a salvage car recently (not a Porsche), and after reconstructing it I had to get a smog and a 'brake and headlight' test. I then could get it registered. One of the benefits is that for registration and taxation purposes I was able to use the dollar amount of the car BEFORE i fixed it...so the taxes were very low. there is no blue book for salvage.

True but insurance is not very useful if you can't get it registered Its better to be safe than sorry. I've seen guys at the DMV counter trying to register a rebuilt vehicle and finding out the hard way.
