FYI there is only one maker of the MAF sensor for the 993 so the $300 aftermarket one for your car is identical to OE.

The K&N's are fine if they're mounted correctly, assuring a good seal and making sure they're not saturated with oil. Any time they're cleaned, just a thin film of oil in lite multiple coats. If you place a paper towel on it and that absorbs oil, then you have too much. That's where the MAF CEL come from when using this type of filter. Too much oil and the film gets contaminated.

I have a general question on the MAF sensor: after a recent car maintenance my Porsche dealer said to me the MAF sensor had been inserted the wrong way by the previous owner (I only have the car for +- half a year). And he charged me for refitting it in the right direction.
I was surprised to hear that the MAF sensor could be inserted in the wrong direction. Why would Porsche (or Bosch?) have engineered the sensor so that it can be inserted in two directions?
To cut a long story short: I didn't believe him (but paid the bill nevertheless), but I would like to know if he was right (so I can maybe apologize or take this into account when cleaning the MAF myself later)

Burning Brakes
Sorry for the late post to this thread, but Mark's comment on MAF pricing brings to mind the issue I've had for a long time over Porsche OEM parts. My understanding is that Porsche performs extra QC inspections on all their parts sourced out......including any Bosch parts.
I've always had difficulty justifying the price differential for their parts over parts that carry the same part number from the supplier. This MAF is a perfect example. Discussion above and by Mark D. indicate that the MAF can be bought for $300. Yet, when I go to Sunset Porsche, the OEM listed price is $981, which Sunset discounts to $700.....still more than twice the cost of buying the Bosch part with the same part number.
I've been advised that buying non-OEM can be problematic since the quality of after market parts......including Bosch......has degraded over the years. So, you are paying the upcharge for the extra QC that assures a properly functioning part out of the box, I assume.
So, for folks such as Mark D and others who have changed out many MAF sensors over the years.....has there ever been an issue with installing the Bosch equivalent to the Porsche part (even though the Porsche part is made by Bosch and carries the same part number)?

I have used a bunch of Bosch products, mostly purchased on Amazon. No issues to date. I have not replaced the MAF so I can't answer that question.
Amazon sells this for $270 or you can go to AutohausAZ for $276.
Or as mentioned above there are non Bosch units avail. for under $100.
Here's the Part No. Bosch 0280217803

I wish I could source a "Bosch" rather than "Porshce" MAF for my turbo (arround 30k miles). Genuine it's very expensive However I did clean it with the CRC cleaner but didn't notice any difference in performance or regular driving. I did clean once the MAF of my E46 M3 and it was night and day difference in performance and it only had 20k miles from new, seems like the moisture was buidled arround the sensor and it wouldn't let rev up happily the engine.
