Leak Down & Compression test from hell- Updated
I just got a leak down & compression test done on a 1996 993 C2 with 60k miles. The car is mint and never seen the track. It drives strong with no valve noise or signs of burning oil. The owner says the oil needs 1 bottle topping up every 2500 miles.B elow is the results. Is this possible or are the mechanics screwing up the test? Shouldn't the leak down been done at 100psi? The shop wants $180 for this work..
Cylinder#.& Leak down (@10 psi)
1-121psi-88%
2-123psi-90%
3-122psi-87%
4-125psi-90%
5-126psi-88%
6-120psi-89%
by the sounds of the numbers....this engine should be finished?
thanks....

10 psi sounds kind of low? I would think the low pressure would result in low numbers and skew the leakdown as losing 2 psi @ 10 is 80% and 2 @ 100 is 98%? (Just guessing)
I can't comment on the actual numbers, but they are very consistent which is good. I'm betting it's tight and just needs to be retested using the proper procedure.
If I recall correctly, mine were 210 across all six... 45k miles with a good amount of track time. I think that was at 100 psi on a hot engine (or maybe it was cold?)
I'm sure someone smarter than me will chime in with the proper testing process and acceptable results.

the leakdown should have been done at 100 psi
The #s you posted are maybe the reverse of the leakdown? Just guessing, but maybe they gave you the pressure they held at 100 psi?
and compression should close to what rw229 said above.
Either someone made some serious errors doing the tests of the engine is in sad shape.

The worst part is that they want payment for their services.
I'm pretty sure the shop screwed up the comp & leak down but the deal is very time sensitive. The next closest Comp test that I can book is 2 weeks away. My contact only gives me 24 more hours to make up my mind.
I was planning on basing my decision on a test drive which I have a good comparison to my 1995 993. If it feels good... I'll take the dive against a messed up compression test saying the engine is finished. My feeling is that the car is strong.
Am I being stupid?

Depends how much you are getting it for...if you can buy it and afford a $5K repair bill and still feel good about what you paid, go for it
I thought you wanted a WB?

Al,
Where did you get this work done... in Toronto? Can I help you by arranging repeat testing tomorrow by someone that actually knows what they're doing?
Leakdowns should be done on a warm motor with oil still on the rings... at the right pressure... at the right crank position (re. valve closure).
Lemme know if I can help .

I'd trust your butt dyno here. The fact that the test results are so atypical, the test procedures highly suspect, AND you have a solid car to compare it to (back to back if you wish, even), makes me think you can purchase with confidence without a retest, so long as your test drive finds no issues.

How much oil are our cars supposed to use? I bought mine with 26,xxx miles and skipped the compression and leakdown test. Last time I changed my oil was 3/09 and 4475 miles later I have added less than 1/2 a quart.

My PPI guy (Michael Schatz) didn't think a leakdown & compression test was important (or even necessarily a good idea) if the car didn't exhibit any symptoms that warranted it.
