Instrument Trim Rings

Here is a new thread about the instrument trim rings --

The kit of five rings will be $70.00 plus shipping. Shipping to anywhere in the US should be $9.00 -- not sure what to do about paypal fees. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I've had request for anodizing -- I will have to have a few sets done in various colors to see how they look -- they will have to be polished before anodizing for best results.

Anyhow, the list as of now is:

Thank you again!

The polishing is something I will need to mess around with and intended only for those who wish to anodize these. Polishing before anodizing yields much better results.

serval 04-01-2010 09:27 PM

The brushed will do then . I can always polish the inside lip myself.

Shipping to Canada will be additional -- I will flate rate box it via USPS -- I hopefully will be able to fit these in a small flate rate box.

I will update this thread about shipping costs to Canada.

Also, for those of you who have ordered multiple sets, CONUS shipping will still be $9.00 -- no need to add additional shipping for multiple sets.

Thanks

a batch of anodizing ranges from $75-$85 irregardless of how many pieces are in each batch, color.

I have one request for red, any other takers for red? This will bring the anodizing costs down quite a bit.

Lets talk about the best way to hold these rings on. How have they been attached in the past?

ABCar 04-11-2010 08:54 AM

how about a light smear of light duty clear silicone on the back of the ring in a few spots. Something that can be rubbd of gently from the lens. Or, I wonder if rubber contact cement would work. That rubs off easy but I don't know the effect it would have on plastic.

larpy 04-11-2010 11:07 AM

I read somewhere about "modeling wax" that will not harm the bezel rings if one decides to remove the trim rings. I do not know exactly what modeling wax is or where to get it.

RE: attaching the rings.
3M trim adhesive? I was wondering the same thing.
Mine should arrive on Friday! Yipee!

jo-hans 04-14-2010 03:07 PM

I would not use glue. Get the mounting putty or reusable adhesive from like Staples. A bit tricky to apply but by the the time you mount the last ring you got the hang of it. The excess putty can be easily removed with the finger nails. I basically rolled up small strings of it and applied in four places. The rings have not come loose since. Good luck.

I used the Staples brand:

http://www.staples.ca/ENG/images/pro...7748_1_enl.jpg

Or use a similar product like:

Hit these with some metal polish and they will shine up like jewels.

Just arrived in Tokyo -- I am here to support the first race of the 2010 season for Formula Nippon at Suzuka Circuit. Whew, thats a long flight I must admit!

Anyhow, glad to see some of these being delivered already. I shipped 30 sets on Tuesday. Antoher 30 sets are slated to arrive to me on Tuesday, I will get those out once I return asap.

I received my beautiful rings today. I was nervous they might be too bling for me...I like understated. Then, I installed them and they are perfect. It really gives the instrument dials a brighter look, but not bling. Very "Machine!"
Chris, once again thank you for getting on this so fast and doing it so right.:burnout:

Here are pictures.

Nurburger 04-15-2010 07:40 PM

How did I know that you were going to be the first to post installed pics!?

It took all of 10 minutes to install these. I love how they work with the aluminum shifter & handbrake. Nice job Chris!

Damn! I have become predictable. Hey, I have a seminar this weekend in the Detroit area...are you going to be around? I will still like to see those wheels we talked about in person.

Thanks Chris !!! awesome work

ditto on the Scotch exterior mounting tape, apology for the crappy rushed photo

95_993 04-16-2010 01:55 PM

Why not the Scotch Poster tape. Appears to be removable. Was it not sticky enough?
I also have Scoth Interior & exterior Mounting Tape. Very sticky though.

Thoughts?

vincer77 04-16-2010 03:44 PM

Did anyone notice that the large face gauge rings seem too small for the guages? The small ones fit great.

I tried the poster tape...trust me...you need the exterior mounting tape for its thickness and adheisive qualities. the rings have a bit of space in there that requires a thicker tape. There is some space between the ring and dial edge but once installed with this tape, there is no visible space and the fit is perfect

Cool interior!

pcarhombre 04-22-2010 12:00 AM

Ok. Stupid question of the day: where does one put the tape. Around the outer edge of the ring, or on the bottom of the ring in contact with the glass? TIA

pcarhombre 04-23-2010 04:07 PM

Too stupid a question for an answer?

axl911 04-23-2010 04:12 PM

I have mine for a long time, and I put it at the bottom edge, not the part contacting the glass. Cut a VERY thin strip. If you put it at the top, it will create a gap between the ring and the gauge.

ditto, I cut very thin (in tape width) strip, used 4 per ring, put them at the bottom/middle inner edge of the ring. I'm sure I didn't get the rings all the way 'in' so they're flush with or contacting the glass, but they look good enough for me. In a couple cases (more the outer smaller gauges) the top of the ring edge protrudes just a hair 'taller' than the gauge outer bezel, but then I'm a DIY neophyte and screw up most everything I touch (there's a thread on light switch bulbs where I got so beaten up I lost my temper in response). But mine look good enough to me, certainly a big improvement especially when one has aluminum on the handbrake or shift lever.

Yup, nice job, look great with just the right amount of bling. The 3M tape worked great, BTW.

I wasn't too excited about the rings because I didn't think they would good with my plain dash. I finally installed them and I was very wrong. They look great. Staples carries the 3M Exterior Tape which worked well. If only someone around here would make a nice ebrake aluminum accent piece I'd be all set.

ps now I need a new ignition trim ring.

My most useful contribution to the Rennlist community

After benefitting from tons of advice on this great site, I think I finally have new and useful piece of info to contribute.

My car was at the body shop when my rings arrived. I asked by body shop guy how to best affix the rings and he pulled out a new(ish) 3M product called: Press-In-Place Emblem Adhesive. It was amazing - he just rolled the rings on the adhesive and then affixed them in place. They are flush and strong. Totally flush since the adhesive is only a thin residue.

Here is the link to the page on the 3M site: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...glP6P5N7LJ29bl

Let me know how it works for you,

911ist 06-12-2010 07:25 PM

decided not to put the rings on my car...anyone here interested? send me a PM.

Yeah, Chris...how about a billet ignition trim ring? I've seen them on other cars, but don't know where to order one. A handbrake piece would also be nice, but I imagine that would be harder to make.

Looking good. I also have the trim rings from Chris and added some more small alu bits and pieces to the interior.

- e-brake button, tiptronic button and ignition surround from porscheshop.co.uk
- alu look e-brake tray and replacement for the casette storage from design911i

While I am sold out now, I do have about five folks who wish to acquire --- so, with that, are there any other folks out there who are interested?

The quantities I had made before (70 sets) allowed for some improved pricing. I'll try to get pricing down like before since the CAD models are already drawn and CNC programming already written.

I bought 3M double sided sticky foam tape. Cut this into thin strips and attached 4 or 5 to each bezel ring. The rings have stayed in place for the past 18 months and are completely reversible if you decide to remove them.

I don't know that it is "better" but I used clay and it has worked out very well and was easy to work with.

Double sided 3M foam tape worked great for me. They haven't shifted in over 15 months.

Just mounted my trim rings. Thought I would share what I used. I used 3M clear mounting tape squares. I cut 2 squares into multiple 1/8" thick strips. I used about 4 strips on each ring. Seems to have exactly the right depth to stick securely and can be removed if wanted at a later date. Only had them on about a week, but so far so good.

I would like one set please when they become available, thx

Hi Chris, could you please let me know how much the rings would be to include shipping to the UK? I think these rings are far superior in looks compared to anything else I have seen, anywhere. I take it that they will fit a 964, as I have read that they are the same size? Thanks in advance. Brian.

Hi Chris, I hope you are feeling a lot better after getting stoned? I would love a set of these rings, as long as they will fit my 964 (you may have seen my much earlier reply), I think I have read somewhere that they are the same sizes? Anyway assuming they are, please put my name down. They require shipping to UK. Cheers and regards. Brian.

01coccobet 07-09-2012 07:54 AM

I was just wondering of how the ring fit in the original-one.
Do you glue them to the oem?
or just press them into place?
In the eventuality I want to take them off, would the oem have any scratch or paint damage?
just curious....

they look to beautifull not to fit!!!

Hi Sid

You must not be receiving my replies -- you are on the list, trust me. Just havent had a moment to update the list here on this (Renn)List :)

Second wave of rings will be completed this weekend, which should cover all who have expressed interest.

Al Z 07-25-2012 11:55 PM

Try a dab of clear silicone around the ring. It does not take much at all to keep them in place.

600RR 07-26-2012 12:06 AM

Thx Chris. Great product!

Chris,

I still don't see my name on your list. I PM you first back in December 2011. I'm ready to pay when you give me the word.

Soicowboy 08-06-2012 11:24 PM

Hey Chris.....great news.....is it same cost to ship to Canada?

Soicowboy

Ricky_D 08-09-2012 10:14 PM

Got mine as well, thanks Chris, looks amazing !

Anyone feels that the two smaller rings are just slightly oversized compared to how the medium and bigger rings fits ? The two small rings does not fit right on the glass like the three bigger ones.

Yes, I noticed that as well. But I'm still happy with the overall improvement in cabin bling. ;)

Great DIY..it was helpful to see where exactly to put the putty and how much...just waiting on my rings to arrive...along with my aluminum pedals that Curve Lover made me buy (kidding) and the 996 black leather/aluminum shifter from Suncoast (no affiliation).

Excited to knock back a couple beers and get these projects done this weekend!

Great job Chris. Mine arrived yesterday. Things take a little longer to get hetre it seems!!

CamsPorsche 08-30-2012 11:10 AM

Sorry for the newbie question but how do you install these rings? Do you glue them to the gauge face? Mine aren't a perfect fit for the guages...slightly smaller in diameter but hardly noticeable...

The pictures on this website definitely do not do them justice, really a classy addition w/o any hint of bling. Thanks Chris.

phoneyman 08-16-2013 02:28 AM

Anyone who installed with blue tac, did you have residue/overflow? I used what I thought would be too small of an amount and still got some overflow in some places. I figured I'd let them sit for a couple days, pick at them carefully to get the big clumps and then rub everything down with IPA to get the sticky residue off.

Yes, this is normal. It's definitely a fine line of too much/too little. You have a good plan ~ just pick out the access. You'll also notice that on really HOT days, the tac will melt a little bit, I just re-adjust the rings back into position and it holds again. I've had mine on for 2 years now and they're perfect! :)
