Air cooled addiction getting worse (56 VW)
I have always loved everything air cooled, but I pretty much leaned towards Porsche's and the occasional Fiat. Well now the "Bug"... pun intended... has bit me. I bought a 64 Beetle a few months ago in SoCal and have been having a great time driving it (ask Cactus and girlfriend)... So... I have been working with a well know SoCal VW builder to build what I think is the perfect blend of early Beetle and 356. Here is the nearly finished result.
Details:
1956 (Oval window rag top) Beetle
Porsche 356 style Banjo steering wheel with Porsche crest
Porsche 356 style steel wheels (minus hubcaps)
Porsche 356 style aluminum brake drums
Okrasa engine kit (with dual carbs)
Abarth style exhaust
Adjustable front beam
Original early 60's Hella rally lights
Also had a SoCal sign painter hand paint the fictitious "Brundage Rally Team" logos on the car. Brundage was the original Porsche and VW importer and distributor for the South East USA. They later moved to Jacksonville and changed there name to Brumos and I think we all know the rest of the story!!!
The cool thing about the Brundage theme is that they were originally located about 2 miles from my office, in Miami Springs. Their original address and 6 digit (xx-xxxx) phone number have been included on the car's lettering as well as the correct fonts that they used back in the good old days.
Enjoy!

Love it. There's a lot of nice touches in there Jason; definitely a bug that looks like it has a wonderful story behind it. I've never seen an Abarth exhaust on a bug either.
Slam it dude.

Very cool!
Love the old bugs. My best friend in high school had a mid 60s bug as his first car (I graduated in 87), I remember spending most of my time in that car being sideways on our wet Vancouver roads.

My 1st car was a bug. A 72 yellow model, but a still a bug. Loved that car it lasted my Dad, older brother, me and my younger brother. My Dad bought it new in 72 and finally sold it in 89.

I love the graphics on it. Also the mix of the 356 Goodies.
Unfortunately I've caught the GT3 Bug.. However I am adding a 356 Wide Body to the stable soon, as I love the oldies and miss pimpin' the air-cooled myself!
Nice Work!

I bet 20% of us 911 owners owned a VW Beetle/Bug at some point. One of my first cars was a Dark Metallic Blue 1972 Beetle and I thought it handled amazingly. What a simple, little car. It taught me a lot.
Love your pics! What a fun machine you bought.
