Default clear coat

Just read a post under 'cheap 97 S' which brought a question to mind. I thought only the metalic paints were clear coated...but the GR car says something about the clear coat wearing through.

Does anyone on the board know for sure, are the solid body paints clear coated?

Be darned. Mine is GP white too....no idea it was clear coated. Had an 83 GR car and I would get a red tint on the wax rag so I (wrongly?) assumed it was not clear coated. With white, hard to tell if I get color on the wax rag; though with clear coat there should not be any color residue on the rag, eh?

Although that site does not indicate that mine is clear-coated, I never get any color on the polishing or the waxing rag - which I was told recently by a very esteemed paint guy is a good sign that in fact, I do have clear coat.

I've heard several times the Guards Red is not but others are. Never made sense to me, but heard it repeatedly.

My GR is not cleared, but I understand that changed around 1997.

When red paint UV oxidizes, it is possible to maintain the deep red color without a clearcoat over it. From 1997, paint formulations in red tints must have improved UV fade characteristics so that a clearcoat can be applied.

I was led to believe that the base/clear process was used starting sometime during the 1996 model year build. Generally speaking, the use of base/clear is not dependent on color. All colors can be applied using this process. Perhaps the non metallic colors were done using a single stage paint during the transition process. Red can definitely deteriorate and fade in a single stage paint. Buffing can bring it back temporarily. If the clear coat is deteriorating you need a new paint job.
