Opinion /advise on value 97 993 cab
Ok, I'm back again...
looking for opinions on the value of a 80k mile 1997 c2 cab (triple black). mostly stock. here's the ebay adv: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT owner says it used 1 qt per 3-4 fuel tanks... only a/c compressor was replaced, (and a top motor). going to take a look on saturday. (I've been looking for a 993 c2 cab, about 4yrs, and know about the sai, dual mass flywheel, etc from the p-car.com site...) whats it worth? TIA! edit: also see the inspection tips from this thread... https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...questions.html |
Anyone?
I'm going to look at the car on saturday, and waiting to hear back from owners mechanic... I'm thinking the car is worth 26-28k stock... owner it thinking 31k and is pretty firm.. am I wrong to think this car will need 3-4k in maintenance... (sai cleaned (light is on), clutch/pp, valve guides, and tires are due.) |
You're looking at considerably more than $3-4K if the top end needs a rebuild. From the sounds of the oil consumption and with the CEL light on (I assume its due to the clogged SAI), you'd be looking at $7-10K minimum, plus there'll be stuff you want to do whilst the engine's out. I think your idea of price is about right, maybe a little too high. Get some quotes from reputable air cooled specialists in your area. Once you have those in hand go back to the seller......

I'm not sure it needs valve guides yet, until I get a ppi done. Owner says its using 1 qt every 4 fuel tanks, but of course I don't know that... (owner drives it only 5k miles /yr). I'm assuming at some point the valve guides will need to be done, and its not too far down the road on a 80k mile car... (the CAI ports don't worry me that much, but its a negotiation point.. since the light is on). in other words, how long do stock valve guides last? how long does the stock clutch and pp last, etc... and what else is going to be due very shortly. is there a way to prove the struts are bad? (I'd be going to pss9's or 10's anyway, but I'm looking for negotation points) |
For "normal" driving, the oil consumption appears high which indicates that a valve guide job is due rather sooner than later. The mileage varies and often the job is triggered by SAI issues. I think 100 kMiles for an overhaul is a fair assumption (maybe on the safer side). If it is the first clutch with 80 miles you will have another bigger item to address.
I would walk away from this car (or pay 25k max). There should be better (= less risk of follow-up expenses) cars out there, some might even have the suspension upgraded which saves you another 3200 USD for a PSS 10 properly installed and aligned. |
FWIW, and I would love to hear the feedback on this. When I was researching my recently purchased Cab, I discussed the valve guides in some detail with Dave Moore, of Moorespeed, in Austin.
He mentioned that the valve guide issue stemmed from substandard valve guides supplied by a subcontractor. According to him, Ferrari's from the same time period also suffered from this issue. He further mentioned that the situation was largely resolved by early 1997 production, and that while he has done well more than a dozen top-end jobs on pre-1997 993's, he has only done one or two jobs on 1997 or later cars. It's worth what you paid for it, but I would be interested to hear anyone's opinion on those comments. It made me feel better about purchasing my April production 1997 model, but any disagreements aren't going to hurt my feelings. I was going to get my car, regardless. It just had absolutely everything I was looking for color and option wise. If the engine needs to be dropped at some point, well, that's what the garage is for. |

can you expand that thought? owner got the car at 50k (from SF) and has not done a clutch... doubt its been done. I would do the RS LFW conversion, but is there a bigger issue hiding? assuming the car drives ok. sure seems like all the reasonable deals seem to be on the left coast! :banghead: I've been looking for about 4 yrs now... <sigh> |
I would agree that the car is priced too high. My '97 cab was 30k with new top, new clutch, Bilstiens w/M030s etc.... and very well maintained. Surely there are better cars out there.

I saw you driving your car on Franklin Rd a few weeks back. Looks good. We move in next week. Mike |
Hey Mike,
Looking forward to seeing ya' here! |

The clutch is a wear item. No other issue than the replacement being rather expensive (~2500 USD)

If you've been looking for four years, either you've been unlucky looking at bad cars or too fussy. Get the engine checked by a pro and ask for a reduction to allow for "some" of this work to be done.
More importantly, bodywork is much more difficult to get right imo so make sure all is in order here again look for advice from a body shop guy if your not sure what to look for. But looking at those photos it does look nice and worth taking a closer look. You need to be a little more brave to buy a car like this. Any car may be ok today but have serious problems tomorrow so be prepared for the worst. Not intended to frighten you though. Good luck. |
