Ducktail Owners - Aftermarket quality?
For those with ducktails, can you tell me which manufacturer you went with and how the fitment was? Major/minor prep work needed? Is the fitment satisfactory?
Finally, does anyone have the Getty carbon fiber ducktail? As a matter of fact, does anyone have any carbon fiber pieces from getty? If so, is the quality good enough to leave unpainted? Thanks in advance guys. |
I purchsed the Rennspeed product only because they were the only one providing it. Then Getty Design came out about 6-8mos later. If I had known I would of waited for the Getty Design product. I just hear that Getty Design products have higher quality. To be honest my piece needed major work.

From Pelican Parts forums:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...metal+ducktail These are probably the best made in terms of fit/finish, strength and authenticity. This man uses a factory metal decklid and cuts it down to the outside edges and inside framework, then grafts a high quality glass ducktail skin onto it like the factory RS lids (although I believe the original frames were aluminum). Factory metal lid edges = factory gaps ... |

Those are for pre '89 911s only AFAIK. The 993 has a significantly different profile and the duck for the 993 is more of an adaptation of the original. I suppose they could custom fab one for a 993 but that sounds EXPENSIVE.

The duck on my ex-993 is a Rennspeed, and very little prep work was needed according to the shop that did the paintwork. I installed it myself, and it lined up perfectly on the first try. The gaps are equally as good as the original steel lid...see pic.
Conversely, my brother recently bought a Rennspeed rear lower valence for his 3.2 Carrera, and the quality was not good at all. If I were buying a new one, I'd probably go with the Getty part. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...1/DSCN1940.jpg |
Getty?
Arnold Getty make really good stuff. I have had two (2) of his 993 RS wings and now a 993 GT2 wing...great quality...and Arnold is actually reachable..

Getty parts are quite good. ALL fiberglass require a bit of rework, and my shop has installed many, many makers fiberglass bits and his require the least rework. Ok, DP (I think it is) out of Germany is supposedly really really really good but $$ and hard to get.
Best part is they are down the road from us here in SoCal and nice guys to boot. |
Stratton duck
Concur on Stratton. See if he has a core donor on hand so keep original for reinstall.

I have a getty one and it was great fit without work. only issues I had were the mounts that sit inside the wing are pretty bad. they put a metal mount that just sits in there with bolts welded to it.

I had a MASHAW on my 993 and it fit great right out of the box. I have a Stratton on my current ride and love it as well.

Plus one on Getty, great product and very little work required as per the body shop.
