Monterey '09 photo thread: Laguna, Pebble, Quail, etc
Post your Monterey, CA, 2009 event week photos here!
Pebble Beach, Laguna Seca Historics, Concours d'Elegance, Quail car show, Concourso, etc... I've been in Monterey ~3 days now. Seen a lot of incredible cars, but this is truly the only 993 I've seen. To get us started, 2 Pebble Beach pix: http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9...42selected.jpg http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8...97selected.jpg |
Update: upon arrival Sat PM @ Tarpy's Roadhouse:
Instead of checking in for the "Jäger" reservation, change that to the "Brian Atkin party." He's the Pelican Parts POC; we're all under 1 reservation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To those local, please post here or PM me if you're interested in meeting RLers Sat PM @ Tarpy's Roadhouse Sat PM. Should be perfect to check out the p-cars in the p-king lot, meet folks, grab grub & brews. http://planetsmilies.net/eat-drink-smiley-5160.gif I have a reservation for ten folks for dinner @ 7:15 PM. Under my name, Jäger. Patio open if you get there early. Tarpy's Roadhouse; 831-647-1444; 2999 Monterey Salinas Hwy; Monterey, CA 93940http://planetsmilies.net/eat-drink-smiley-5158.gif 5 minutes from track to cold brews. Who's interested? |

If you pass through SLC on the way home give me a call and I'll buy ... lunch. |
:crying::crying:Wish I was able to make it. PLEASE post lots of pics.
|
I have been invited to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday ... will post photos for all
|
Sat night? Sure, I'll come on by. I'm going to the track Friday; not sure what's up Saturday. As I posted in another thread, I won't have much to look at with the RS America track rat (likely with the bike and rack attached)!
|
I'll take some pictures at today's Concours on the Avenue in Carmel. They are staging the cars right now outside of our hotel.
Not sure how many 993's there will be in the show, but there is some BEAUTIFUL metal out there. I know I'm going to be having fun this week!!! :) Jager: you going to be on the avenue today? |

One who was excited to finally meet you is Speedy. She heard a lot about you from DJF1 (all lies?). I don't wanna have to tell her the news... :( Another Pebble Beach photo of her, when she was happy & looking forward to meeting the Moffat (heck if I know why)... http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3...99selected.jpg |

Not to be a wet blanket, but is parking my car in a hotel's outdoor lot in the same place for 3 nights in a row a real cause for security concerns, or am I just paranoid?
My rational side says there's herd safety in numbers and there are far more appealing targets than mine. |
VERY USEFUL DAILY SCHEDULE -- CLICK HERE; put together by former PCA president, Prescott Kelly. This is Porsche Club of America's concise calendar of what's going on this week, starting with Carmel-by-the-Sea's “Concours on the Avenue”.

My rational side says there's herd safety in numbers and there are far more appealing targets than mine. I actually thought the same thing when I booked my hotel, but I think the safety in numbers thing should hold true. Also, my lowly 993 will not really be drawing much attention in the sea of high-line stuff that we'll see up there. I was in Carmel last year for 3 days (not in Aug.) and felt comfortable with my car covered and parked right in front of the lobby of the little Inn we stayed in. |

Just got back to the Inn.... WHAT A DAY on the avenue :)
I've got pictures and I'm working on downsizing them. There was only one 993 and it said that it was "built to RS spec's". It was Speed Yellow. It was hard to me to take a picture of it. The special car of the day for us was a REAL Porsche Glockler from 1952. Only five were manufactured. #1 and #2 were Destroyed. The one that was here is #3 and #4 and #5 are known to exist but not in running condition. What also blew us away was who owned it.... a friend of ours! We asked him when he bought it. He said two years ago and since we have been moving all over the country and haven't seen him.... we didn't know. Anyway, I thought Robert was going to go in his pants! Can you say MILLIONS? Pictures coming.................... |

Here's a couple of Pebble Beach pictures of me from last month. Does that count? :)
|
PS: Nice talking to you Jager. I'll give you a call tomorrow and maybe we can get together for a drink or something. Maybe even lunch. Looks like we might be out and about near you tomorrow after all :)
A few pictures of the Glockler: http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/6599/gl4n.jpg http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/4038/gl2z.jpg http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4271/gl3p.jpg |
Jason-- Nice, but ya gotta at least photo-edit & add a car into the frame :to_order:
Your Slate Gray would be perfect in the picture. One of my best friends had a 968 cabriolet that shade, & I luved it. Same when I got to see RLer JHummel's in person. (Guess you guys both do the cargo flying. Cool coincidence with y'all & the "993 thing.") You fly guys need to get out to Monterey this week! |
Jason,
Did you just decide to pull the plane over on the way to Japan? Looks like fun! |

I heard all I had to do was hang out at Circle K's & 76 Stations to see 1 of the 4 US-spec RSs. 'Til that works, this a great excuse for getting myself to the Historics.

We have been without a P-car for only three weeks and massive withdrawl has already set in. After selling the 993 that we know we can not top I don't THINK that is what we'll be getting next. This is what Robert was drooling all over this afternoon. He wants an R Gruppe Classic:

Also saw Ferraris, Bentleys, but - gasp - no 993s 'til finally seeing Schmidtwerk's museum-specimen RS. This is still the only 993 I've seen in the wild, in Monterey. Here she is, just 30' away from that R Gruppe Classic ... patiently waiting outside the 'velvet rope.' As I saddled her up at the show's end, a tow truck lady slowly drove past, saying she was about to tow her. Ooh, too exciting. Beach city dangers -- who knew? (I always figured RLer Cactus would get hauled off before Speedy, anyway. So she's safe ... til the weekend?) http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/9545/p8110006crop.jpg |

We also saw a black Panamera on the way into town on Hwy 1. Personally we both think it looked like a Cayenne that's been stepped on by the jolly green giant. Sorta squished. Nope, no more new Porsche's for us. We'll stick to the oldies but goodies for now own. The new ones just are missing something , at least to us. The leather just smells different and the sound just isn't the same. They are too comfortable and cushy. Almost like they have no soul. Like they sold it to the devil or something...... RoJoT-- Very well-written sentiments about the Panamera. +1.
I was at the US debut, & one of the 1st at the PCA Parade banquet last month to see it up close, get my hands on it, sit in it. But. As much deference for the past & hope for the future that I have for the factory, IMHO, I'm not too enthralled about the spirit of their recent productions, ever since the 996. Now, if they just had a new a new Speedster that was worthy, of, say the inspired curves of a 993... hmmmm... I rarely see a Porsche from a distance that I mistake for a 993. Ironically, this 996 C4S initially fooled me, because of the continuing red rear horizontal valence... shame on you! Repeat after me: "I'm a poseur that wants to look like a 993." ;) Kinda kidding. It's a wee bit of a glimmer of hope, when you see some 993 design cues ehoed in the factory's more modern offerings. A glimmer of hope amongst many coachwork foibles. Bonus points to those sharp eyes that spy a red Speedster in the background. She was penned in, but rescued when the tow truck lady took care of those pesky problems... http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/8...10188cropf.jpg |
As relayed to JoAnne, IIRC, this one of the absolute first Volkswagens ever made!

So that Carrera GT is Cheryl Dunkel's? Have not seen her in years!
RSA is ready to go, bike rack installed and all.......... Probably just park it and pedal around town the way things get so congested. I'll see what I can contribute, probably all race cars come Friday. |

Yup Cheryl in the flesh :) They are camping at the track in the biggest, baddest Motorhome up on the hill. You will not be able to miss her, or her her laughing. I swear she is the happiest female I have ever met. She said Peter was racing the 550. I didn't ask if she were racing her Carrera GT this year or not. They were not showing a car in the Concours yesterday and we just ran into her by the Porsche Glockler. Where else? :) |

Where's everyone???
We just checked into hotel #2. The TV didn't work, lights went out, but maintenance has fixed it for us. Tomorrow Hotel #3. Sure wish we knew we were going to be able to do this last year and not two weeks ago. We at least would have been able to stay in just one place for the entire week. Sheeze. I feel tired, and I'm not the one lugging all the suitcases up and down the stairs either. We went to the Automobilia meet at the Embassy Suites in Seaside today. There was some interesting stuff that could have been purchased, but it was even more interesting in the parking lot. Lots of Porsche. I didn't take out the camera. Shame on me. I think I had my mind on a Manicure and Pedicure which was high on my list of things to do today before all the real fun action starts and I don't have time to do it. :) We also drove by the auction sites and they were unloading a bunch's of the cars for the auctions. There were Reliable Trucks everywhere. I saw A LOT of American Metal, most of it pretty cool, some of it not so nice. The R M and Russo and Steele Auctions have some Porsche's. We are going to go to the R M auction Friday night. What is everyone doing tomorrow night? |
Want to put together a group for tomorrow night? I might be beyond tired since I'll have to get up about 4 to get to Quail Lodge by 7 for that Panamera thing. And I did the super, super, unbelievably cheap ($59/nt) room in Salinas, so I figured I'd take a nap or something and head back to the "city" for dinner and whatever will pass for nightlife. Karen won't come down until Friday night.
Back to the Dunkles. I was reflecting today, and remember when a (then) girlfriend of mine was living on Balboa Island. Cheryl knew I was in town, so she invited me over to say hi. In her garage was her new daily driver.............a 924S. Things have come a long way, huh? |
Oh, and I'm at 510-568-5171.

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/2664/p8110183.jpg There is even more to the story of that VW. I walked up to the owner as he was telling Sam Cabiglio the story. AS I waited for Sam I could hear about half of it. Not only one of the very early ones but is was made for a German Chancellor and was in to Russia. It was then hidden in a garage (barn) for many many years until it was found. Now it resides in a garage in of all places but...... PRESCOTT Arizona. WE live in PRESCOTT, Arizona. It should be indoors for dinner. Those who arrive early just stagger in from the patio. Hey, wait a minute: maybe you wanna keep an eye on your 993 & check out others' rides the whole time? Hmmmm. Brilliant! Leave it to a RLer for such pure logic. If anyone thinks it will be too chilly outside for dinner, raise your voice! |

Fri: Speedy enters the La Dolce Vita Concours d'Elegance @ the Black Horse Golf Course. Fri PM: no plans, but curious - who's going to the Mission Hill party? Prescott Kelly says it's not to be missed... Friday’s most important event for PCAers will be Monterey Bay Region’s Welcome Party at the historic Carmel Mission. Worth a (motivational?) re-print...
We will be mobilizing from Salt Lake City for the long haul across northern Nevada. Anybody made a schedule yet? That'd be some caravan blasting down 80. __________________ John '78 SC Targa From the PelicanParts forum thread, "Anyone from Colorado going to the historics?" |

TODAY, noon-2PM @ Carmel: Tour d'Elegance

For those already here... Not spelled out on the PCA's master schedule: TODAY ~noon - 2 PM, you should be able to see the majority of Pebble Beach competitors parked in Carmel, in addition to their driving tour before & after. More info on the PB Concours website: "Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance" 'Gentlemen, start your cameras!' ;) (JoAnne, too?) The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex is an annual driving event that delights entrants and spectators alike. The Tour is open to all entrants in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. And spectators are invited to view the Tour at key points along the route, including stops at the Carmel Mission and along Ocean Avenue in Carmel. It is important to note that the Tour and the Concours are directly linked. If two cars tie in class competition at the Concours, the car that has successfully completed the Tour gets the nod. TODAY, August 13 7 – 8 a.m. Cars line up near Collins Field in Pebble Beach 8:30 a.m. Tour departs, tracing portions of 17-Mile Drive and Highway One 11:30 – 12 noon Tour arrives in Carmel-by-the-Sea 12 noon – 2 p.m. Cars are displayed on Ocean Avenue 2 – 2:30 p.m. Tour returns to Pebble Beach 3:00 p.m. Concluding Champagne toast for participants |

More info on the PB Concours website: "Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance" 'Gentlemen, start your cameras!' ;) (JoAnne, too?)http://www.pebblebeachconcours.net/t...2c25faaa4a.jpg We were standing on the corner in front of our hotel <now singing> Watching all the cars go byyyyyy < no longer singing> early this morning. The first of the Pebble Beach cars started arriving really early, about 10:45. It was so crowded that you could not even get a decent picture off. I was disappointed about that, but the police officer that was working the intersection was so entertaining I didn't complain much. We then TRIED to walk the Avenue to see the cars up close and personal, but forget it. It was a mob scene. I guess that's because very Little is Free this weekend, and everyone LOVES a freebie... We still walked Ocean and we spotted a Teslaon a side street. I did get a few clear shots of it without some dude or dudettes big butt in my viewfinder. Guess they might not of known what it was so it wasn't attracting attention..... After that it was on to Laguna Seca to pick up our tickets and that was a total treat. As we were buying our tickets we had a fleet of 917's drive on by. I was so excited I could not get my camera out of the bag and then I couldn't push the button fast enough. I am sure I was the clown of the day for the ticket vendors at the track. We spend a little time there watching the guys practice without the huge crowd. It was nice. On the way out we were passed by a Bugatti Veyron. It is GORGEOUS! Robert just about soiled his britches and that rarely happens for anything that isn't a Porsche. Pictures upcoming. I have to size them first. AND YES JAGER, Robert and I are having too much fun. So sorry for yelling in your ear about the 917's but I was so darn excited..... Does it sound like I'm having fun;)Sorry for yelling in yo So much fun that I somehow found a room in Monterey for Tomorrow and Saturday night so we may be able to do Tarpy's after all. Is there still room? We won't have to make the long trek up the coast to this hotel anymore!!!! Also about tomorrow night, are you going to any of the auctions after the PCA thing? Those PCA functions at events like this usually don't last that long and the night will still be young........ Anyone else doing an auction or two? |
Darn Ford Explorer had to turn in front of us right as this car was pulling onto Ocean Avenue for the lunch. I wanted to get a better picture, but this car wasn't on the Avenue. It like...... disappeared.
Almost all the cars got applause from the cored. This was the only car that got a audible gasp too. I have no idea what it was and that is WHY we both wanted to go see it. Maybe a Delage??? All I know it was GORGEOUS and normally I'm not into this type of automobile. I appreciate thier beauty though..... Maybe it the new Panamera !!!! <tee hee hee> http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1206/favz.jpg The photo does not do the actual paint and color of this car justice at all. |

Was one of the masses on Ocean Ave today. A mass, as was mentioned by Joanne.
Oddity of today was seeing a Citroen SM towing a.....Citroen SM. Couldn't exactly tell what was going on as they were going the opposite direction. At the track Friday, taking a gazillion photos. A couple from the Porsche Zentrum on the outskirts of Quail Lodge. |
That's like a whole portable Porsche dealership!!!!!!
|
I still can't figure out if I like the Panamera or not. So far it's a not.
Funny story.... Today when the Tour d'Elegance got to Ocean Avenue there were two Panamera's leading the first cars in and the POLICE WOULD NOT LET THEM IN!! He ended up having to apologize when told they were Porsche's with Porsche head honcho's inside, but everyone standing on the corner got a good giggle out of it. Seeing the Panamer's again I though that it not only has the look of a squished Cayenne, but the rear quarter also sort of looks like an old late 90's Taurus Station Wagon. Here is a picture I took of the Tesla. I loved the look of front of this car and the interior kicks too. I really like this car. http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/9973/teslau.jpg |

On my way to the track now!!! SO EXCITED I can spit.... ;)
I'm wearing Purple and white plaid shirt, jeans, my lime green running shoes and monstrous paper/straw hat. Say HI if you see me. We'll be in at Best Western Monterey Inn starting tonight. Anyone else staying there? Checking out of the hotel here in Watsonville. The ash from the fires in Santa Cruz is so bad. Even can be hard to breath. I feel very sorry for the folks who have to evacuate. Hope no Rennies are in harms way. |
Just boarded my connecting flight in Phoenix. Should be there in a few hours. I'm staying at the Courtyard by Marriott in Salinas...

One night at the Auctions. I don't think I can walk another block let alone 5 blocks to make it to the RM auctions again tonight. What a GREAT WEEKEND. I think I'll be smiling NON STOP for a month after this. I will REALLY be smiling if we get the car that Robert found this afternoon.:biggulp: |

Awesome!!! Thank you to all contributors. Part of the RL spirit IMO.
My wish list began with the Lambo Miura... so many toys , so little cash!!!  |
Jager -
Thanks for posting the pics of my yellow "TTBEEST" out at Poppy Hills! Yes, I call it a TT - it's my car and I can call it what I want to! :D Oh, and the seats are Recaros, not GT3s.... but they hug you tight just the same? Couldn't make it to the track on Saturday, hope to run across folks on Sunday! CHEERS!!! |
From the race perspective:
|
When does this end? I was wondering so that I can wander out to 101 and watch the cars heading south again.
|
I'm just back after an amazing, great day. Saw Leno and Hurley Haywood, the amazing cars, the great races - it was so cool to see the 917's 908's (especially Brian Redmond winning!) and the fleet of 962's. The 917 space frame and engines in the Porsche exhibit, the 550's on the track, I could go on and on.
And...My son and I got a lap in the Panamera pace car. I'll try to get some pics up and movies soon (they look a lot like those posted already) - but time to crash... wow - what a day! |
What a GREAT DINNER with GREAT People. A perfect ending to a GREAT weekend. :) It's not often enough that we RListers can can get together like this for dinner .There were more of us, but the DC and others left early... something about a bachelor party? ;)
I LOVE the pictures of the cars on the track/ It's one thing to see them in the paddock, but it's seeing them on the track that takes the cake! Thanks for posting them. Do yo u have more?? |

My kid was wiped out, long day for a 6 year old. Off to the track... Steve, maybe we will see you there! |
More at the track of; 917, 908 (Redman), 956/962
|
Jerry S. was driving the 908 #12 with the two arrows on it. Sam Cabigilo was in the #20 917. Nice to have a friend like Jerry who lets you drive one of his toys :) I just wanted a ride in the sling seat.
Sam Strapping in: http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/4198/samd.jpg Once again great track shots Loren. Definitely not taken with a palm sized point and shoot  I REALLY want one of these. Is that such a bad thing to want? It was parked on the hill with the rest of us plain old folks. My lil' MINI can be seen in the picture too. I'll try to throw some up here that aren't elsewhere. Then I'll link to Shutterfly and/or Picassa for the rest. And anyone who wants full resolution, just ask.
So we'll start with Thursday 7AM and the Porsche Zentrum that appears just outside Quail Lodge. #1 is obvious. #2 is part of the "welcoming committee", Andrea and Cecilia who work for PCNA via a marketing agency. #3 is Cecilia again with the mock up Panamera with 2800 (?) photos individually applied. #4 is where they get individual with you--Ulrike Lutz of the Exclusive and Tequipment Departments (and moonlights as an instructor with the Driving Experience at Leipzig, etc.). |

For anyone that hasn't had their fill of cool cars & isn't at the Monterey Bay Region's PCA driver's event right now, what may be last option before "Car Week" is over: Open house at the tony Blackhawk Collection (Danville, CA). Ends today at 5 PM. Just one of the impressive classics you should be able to see: 1974 Porsche 911 RSR Chassis Number 911 460 9113 - Engine Number 684 RSR 9113 delivered new to New York in 1974. First raced in Mexico City October 20 1974 with Muniz / Quintanilla / Bolanos; taking 22nd. This work horse continues from 1974 through 1986 to participate in eight Dayton 24 hour races and nine Sebring races. With its best finishes 3rd Sebring and 4th Daytona. |
Might be in the neighborhood of Blackhawk in a couple of hours..........been forever since I've been there, so I may pop over. Funny to see the last two posts of Mark's avatar with the Akin "last 935" and Jager posting the RSR above. Friend of mine owed that 935 (had to buy it with the stablemate 962). Said he couldn't fit in it as the floor isn't flat since the whole tunnel thing was going on with that car, so he sold it. He's got at least 2 other 935's, so don't feel sorry for him. And he'd hoped to have his IROC (which isn't exactly the RSR as above, but close enough). It was a car that fell into pro racing use, and subsequent hacking into a 935esque car. But the kicker on that one is that Pablo Escobar (yes, THAT one.........go look him up if the name escapes you) once owned it, and either a friend or relative raced it.

[QUOTE=RJT;6807742]He was a Rennie!!! I'm NOT telling Robert that! He wanted me to go up to him and ask him if he was on Rennlist while he was sitting in line waiting to be placed, but I said he had a female in the car with him and I NEVER go up to men I don't know when they are with a female. Females intimidate me! Robert just shook his head and chalked it up to another "JoAnnism".
Joanne, I wished you would have said hello while I was in line waiting to get placed for the Ocean event. I was actually in the car alone for over an hour, my wife showed up from the hotel in a cab and jumped in just before placing. My wife is cool, she would have talked you ear off, that is her in the reflection of the glass on her "pinkberry". |
Thanks for sharing the awesome posts and pics. I made it out on a brief whim Friday (sights and sounds were jaw dropping in itself; I can only imagine once the actual racing and festivities kicked in Sat. and Sun.). I really wish I could have stayed the weekend. Until next time....

and another funny (at least to me) pic. I told my kid "you gotta get a shot when we go down the corkscrew, OK?" "Sure dad, no problem" I knew it wasn't likely. His attempts came up a little "short" (he's 6. Get it? :) ) |
As always a fantastic show at the Historic races, especially at the Corkscrew. Not sure if anyone else saw it but in the Group 6A race a 250TR spun in the middle of the Corkscrew right in front of another 250TR. The second car barely missed T-boning the guy who spun. On the next lap the first guy lost it at the Corkscrew again (either a mechanical problem or he overcooked the approach) and stuffed his nice 250TR into the tires. I think he had a very bad day. Later, I watched Brian Redmond thread the needle in a 908 between two other cars as they exited the corkscrew. Amazing stuff.

Jo-- For your next P-car...
At Laguna Seca Saturday, Robert was interested in the tangerine '74 RSR (see bottom photo). Yesterday, I met a RLer yesterday who knows the owner. Just tell me if you'd like more info. Another option's above, FS at the Blackhawk Collection. Of course, you can't lose with a 993, or perhaps the following, shown at the Carmel Concours Tuesday. Probably has a discount for the fact it doesn't have matching Fuchs! ;)

Great pictures everyone. I was out at Laguna Seca in the Porsche corral on Sunday morning. I was surprised how many cars I recognized from r-list but apparently not when the owners were around. Drove the parade lap with my three boys in the car. A good time was had by all, especially by my 10 year old 'round the corkscrew.
Went out to Pebble on Saturday and then to Porsche Zentrum at Quail where I got to drive a Panamera 4S. It was great, the PDK is terrific (the buttons work just fine though they are bassackwards from the paddle shifters in my BMW), and the car is a lot better looking in person than in pictures. Wish we could have gotten there earlier in the week. Looks like there's a lot of free stuff then, and since I was toting three kids I had no interest in paying the $150 admission price to Concours. |
Holy cow, great pics everyone. I'll try to get some of mine shrunk and posted tonight.

Damn, compressed too small to read. If anyone wants the original, let me know. But the relevant number is $1.8M (based on 6/08 exchange rate.........which begged the question of this being a "leftover" '08?). Also, shipping is $80K. HUH? What's it cost to charter a plane just to transport them one-by-one, plus singlehandedly deliver the thing to a dealer?

Friday night at the PCA party, a Veyron drove past us at the Carmel Mission. Sunday at the Laguna Seca Raceway, a carguy came up to talk 993s & Speedsters. He turned out to be a VW owner & enthusiast. He had looked at a Veyron up close, his goal to photograph the Volkswagen name displayed in it. Said it didn't take long once he looked in the engine compartment & found a couple parts with the VW stamp. -------------------------------------------------- From the Tues Carmel Concours: 'BIRD 356' flew in from FL http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/7581/p8110070.jpg |

JoAnne-- Good to see you back in the photo thread action. ^^ Many aspects of that Alfa are cool. I was told it's >$200k USD. I'm not familiar with it or the new Tesla you posted earlier, but the latter may be preferable, IMHO.
Was also told that there are only two of the new Alfas in the Monterey Peninsula. This info was all from Friday's La Dolce Vita Automobili. I was lucky enough to be befriended by the Alfa Romeo club, one of whom had a gorgeous Porsche on display. Good group; they knew how to have fun at a Concours event. I'll have more photos of another shade of the above Alfa later. In the meantime, since the 'dueling photos' have kicked back in ;), here's one back in the Carmel park... http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/8732/dscf9596crop.jpg |
One of Robert's Best Friends is an Alfa freak and you are right, they know how to have fun. I always loved the little Guilia's myself. Did you know all you need to keep an Alfa running is a Hanger, Duct tape, Rubber Bands, a hanger and a brick?
Here are a few more taken on Firday in the Paddocks before they got way to crowded: Hawaiian Tropic 935. Where are the bikini clad girls? Robert was at Riverside Raceway the day that Rolf Stommelen died. He actually was taking pictures of him and then the crash. Of course it was not in this car, but it was in a 935... http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8375/35814119.jpg Anyone know what this is? http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/5919/79954373.jpg |

One time I go up early to an IMSA event at Sears, circa 1981-2, and there's these two South/Central Americans who ran in the a-step-down GTO class with a Mustang and a Corvette. Their pit crew all had matching shirts--Hells Angels, Titusville, FL. Pauls, Whittingtons, Lanier, J David Dominelli (Ponzi scheme)........it went on and on. And to clarify, the friend here locally owned the Akin cars at some point recently (had to buy them both as a package deal), not Pablo Escobar. |
Gotcha....
I remember the Whittingtons (father and son). That's about the time I got interested in racing. I am glad I wasn't involved in racing during that decade. Speaking of racing and my olden days. It was fun catching up with Hurley during the weekend. He is always such a gentleman and was a pleasure to work with. I'd love to work with him again one day.... The photogapher now uses one of them as his computer's desktop image. Those that have PMed me for high-resolution shots should enjoy. As I type, Speedy's featured on their homepage: madWhips.com. I followed this Speedster out of Laguna on Saturday PM and have to say I really wondered if it was real. Sure looked good in any event.
Ooops! Now I realize that was you and your new project Curve Lover. Very pretty! It may not be factory but who cares - it sure looks it. I was in the silver 1980 Aston right behind you on the way out of the track. |

Dear JoAnne and Jager (sorry I didnt give you the oomlau above the 'a') :...
--> Can you each start your own threads entitled "Jager's (curve lover) thread" and "JoAnne's (RJT) Thread" ? It will be much easier to sort and follow your comments on all things 911 (RJT) and all things Speedster (curve lover)... and much easier for me to engage in the dialogue ! Seriously, one of the highlights of my dizzying trip Monterey weekend was meeting you guys and your respective spouses (who we all depend on to support and fuel our respective car insanities). For those of you who have not met either Jager, (his wife), JoAnne or Robert - I feel bad for you... seek them out at any PCS / Rennlist / "Porscha" (<--- for you JoAnne) meet. You will thoroughly enjoy it... they are a riot to be around... and very engaging, warm, and friendly. I immediately enjoyed their company.. my only regret was not meeting them sooner ! And I hesitated staying another day, just to hang out with them (but... as a Monterey newbie I was overwhelmed so...i headed back to SF saturday night) ps: Dont ever say "porsh" to JoAnne... you will get a "it's porsHA" response.... even though... it is really "por-sheh".... I didn't correct her... she doesnt seem like one who takes well to following direction ! ;) ) |

More pictures and of course, a story :) This is Jeff Zwart's 906 (Carrera 6). Years ago Jeff brought this car to a PCA GPX Christmas Banquet in Long Beach years ago. Since the Banquet room was upstairs it had to be lifted up to the second floor on a freight elevator which consisted of only two skids. It was no problem driving it on to the skids and getting it up to the room, but after the banquet driving onto the skids, late at night, in the dark, with no end bumpers was a scary proposition. We were all sweating bullets that the car would not be driven too far down the skids and fall off. As you can see by the condition the car is in now, everything worked out okay. :) http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1299/r95b.jpg Hey Alf... Would of, Could of, Should of...... I just saw a '55 bent sunroof for sale (the rarest of the rare) and the owner and I were discussing the Continental badge. I've read in the past that all '55 Coupes and a few early '56 Coupes brought into the U.S.A. through the New York importer, Max Hoffman, were badged that way until Ford threatened to sue over it. Do you know if that's the case? I've been told by body craftsmen that if the front fenders are original, all of these cars have the factory holes for the badge in the fenders but most of them were bondo'd over to 'update' the look when they were re-painted. The end of the story is Porsche then changed the badging to 'European' through '56 and then dropped the badges altogether, probably sometime around when the T2 chassis came out (I am such a nerd for knowing all this crap.....) |

Picked them up for next to nothing, then spent probably more than they were worth to restore them. They've always been actively run here locally since they've been brought back to properly restored.
It was either Larry or John who commissioned Robert to make a scale model replica of this car. It took Robert a while to get it done just right as he always wanted his models to be and it turned out great.. I think they sold the car or one of them moved to Show Low Arizona because that is where the placard about the car said it was located now. |

Just thought that these may be of interest, pictures of the stunning new Devon GTX at it's launch party at a private house on 17 Mile Drive overlooking Pebble Beach, on the Friday night before appearing at Laguna Seca on Saturday:
I had the priviledge of being invited as part of the Singer 911 crew which was press launched a few hours earlier in Monterey. Rob (the man behind Singer) knew the design team of the Devon, so I managed to spend the best part of the evening enjoying talking technical with the engineers. In retrospect, this alone was a major feat as by the time we left the party I had (along with the rest of the Singer lads) gone without sleep for 40 hours in order to get the car built and to the launch. Apparently the Devon team had pretty much done the same...... |

From what I've been told the hardest car to drive was the 935. Is was a monster on wheels. I've got more pictures coming up. Thanks for the link! |

Holy Cow!!! Look at all the people!!!! And to think I thought the track was crowded on Saturday afternoon.
Here are a few shots taken on Saturday morning in the Porsche Paddock. There were a lot of Porsche's there, but it didn't seem to be as many as there were in 1998 for the 50th anniversary celebration. This car is EXACTLY like Robert's first 911 he bought waaaaaaaay back in 1967. He said it was a trip to see it there. We never say the owners or we would have asked to see the serial number. Maybe it was his beast :) http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/9048/r97.jpg Anyone want to buy this car? It's only 90 grand... http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/5474/r98.jpg Another interesting 'tribute' car: http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/7741/r99.jpg |

There have been a number of really beautiful tribute cars done lately as prices have gotten out of reach. The last good deal on a driver RS that I saw was at European Collectibles last Spring at $180K IIRC. I doubt we'll see any lower than that from now on. A buddy owned a beater (White/Blue Graphics) that we used to race at Sears Point years ago, it was the purest raw 911 experience I can remember. Anyway, thanks for the picture, really beautiful car. |
JoA-- When I first saw your above photo, I thought of the challenging light of Bruce Canepa's downstairs showroom. I figured Tru-Speed must have better lighting; I was suprised to read the following. Good job with that photograph; it turned out much better than mine at Canepa.

That's asier to wear than carrying your 993 everywhere ;) Regarding Alf/ AlpinaDVL's below posting about me wearing a "got jäger?" shirt at Laguna, check out the following Pelican Parts forum member (uh, the one on the RIGHT). [FWIW, thanks to JoAnne/ RJT, I have a similar photo with Jay & me, in my 'jäger' T.] https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1252207442.jpg From the "Speedster type 993 photo thread"... From looking at the photo, you are in reality "E" from Entourage, correct? That's how you know Jay, from the business? ;) |
^ ^ Dean-- :roflmao: You're right, the above Pelican Parts Forum fella (check his shirt) does look like E! :roflmao:
Like many here, I'm just lucky to be part of JoAnne/ RJT's entourage. Ironically, Leno was one of the few I introduced her to that she hadn't already met. Here's a photo from Fri's La Dolce Vita Automobili. Blue Turquoise, owned by a RLer. When I introduced him to JoAnne Saturday, it took them 30 seconds to do the "you look familiar" thing, then figure out they had met, & he'd been invited to her & Robert's house. Again, I'm just part of her entourage... http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/604...artdsc0105.jpg Image copyright © 2009 J. Hutson Hart, HOT SUN Consultants, Inc. |
:rolleyes:Same event, same 993, different photographer:
by RLer Erik/ EB847... http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/1...ulsdsc3981.jpg PS While talking to Jay, I said I'd been to his show's taping 3 times, but no photo with him. Never missing an opportunity for self-promotion, he immediately replied, "You need to come to my new show." Always missing an opportunity, I failed to say, "Do you know anybody that can get me in? Plus, can you talk Seinfeld into bringing his 993 Speedster to your first show?" ;) Luckily, Jerry & I did talk Speedsters soon after RJT took a photo of Leno & I, but would have been fun to continue chatting about 993s last night in the studio (Seinfeld was Jay's 1st guest). Yeh, I'm a dreamer... |
Terrific video found on Pelican:

Great find! I think I saw RLer Jeff's 993 RS at the Quail @ about the 1 minute mark.
Conspicous how everything looked like it was at an event or Canepa's, until it came to conspicous Panamera road footage, starting @ ~1:35? Likewise, too many feature shots for it to blend in. Looks like they even selected their below screen shot to be the new Porsche sedan. Hmmmm.... |
Odd, it was only posted in the 964/993 forum on Pelican, apparently a full DVD version is on the way. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=498105
OT: I didn't know about the YouTube [yt] tags, nice. |
