The official PORSCHE 993 OBD II test drive
 

I'm posting this as a new thread and hopefully it will be easy to find in the future.
The Porsche techs have a reader that tells them which flags have been thrown, and what the engine load is. My reader (Actron) tells me what flags have been thrown. I have found that it takes a drive at 2000 rpm or less and light throttle for a few miles after the first few flags have reset. The SAI needs 2 cycles (starts) to reset (don't ask me how I know this).

Thanks for posting. My battery went flat on me just days before I was due to get smogged and I though Oh No. Charged the batter, drove it to work a couple of days and passed the test, whew!! Maybe I didn't loose the codes, but for future reference this is great. Can these cycles be done independently of each other, so if you miss one on one day can you come back and re-try or do you start all over again with all of them?

Rich, it sounds like I could start the car and drive it at a constant
1800 RPM for 10 minutes straight and that would get me flags 1, 2, and 3.

Then I should drive around for another 10 minutes or so at a low speed and then idle the car for 20 seconds- giving me flag 4.

Flags 5 and 6 should have also been set by this time.

Is this the proper interpretation of the chart? If not, can anyone who's gone through this just write out simple dummy-proof directions?

Here's the simple version:

Start engine, let idle for approx. 2 min, 10 secs.

Accelerate to 20-30 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 3 min, 15 secs.

Accelerate to 40-60 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 15 mins.

Decelerate and come to a stop. Then:

Idle in Neutral for 5 mins. (manual trans.)

Idle in Drive for 5 mins. (Tiptronic trans.)

During the drive cycle, do not exceed 3,000 rpm or 60 mph.

This is the "BMW" drive cycle, but it works equally well on 993's and if done properly does not require a second drive cycle.

I ran through this cycle three times..... over kill. But it worked! However, I think it should read " do not evceed 3,000 RPM" not 2,000.

Oops...my bad. 3,000 rpm is correct. I corrected my original post.

Sure, OK with me...This is just an edited/simplified version of the BMW drive cycle that I found on a RL post a couple years ago.

I found that the most difficult things are finding an appropriate area to do the test drive and keeping the car below 3,000 rpm. But if the driver follows the steps, it really does work on the first try...at least it has for me.
