Bilstein HD + M033 springs on 993 Targa - Good idea?
Hello 993 (targa) specialists,
I'd like to mount Bilstein HD shocks + M033 springs on my 993 Targa.
What do you think of this kind of package for a 993 Targa?
Isn't it too hard? Do I risk to have some problem with the roof in the future?
Thanks a lot for your advices,
Vincent
PS: Option B is a brand new M033 RoW package (shocks+springs).

I hope it isn't too stiff and rattlely - the 97 targa I am looking at has the Bilstein PSS9 set-up. Don't know if the swaybars are aftermarket though. Having a heck of a time getting it in for the PPI down there. It looks like it's going to Vortex now as opposed to German Specialties as first arranged.

If I could do it again, I would go with the adjustable Bilstein shocks. I have the HD's and the ride is a little tight. Not as comfortable as it once was but I guess the great handling costs in comfort. Go with the PS10's.

I do not have the 033's but rather the 030's and HD's. Setup seems proper, not to harsh. The car looks much better and turns 100% better than with the original equipment. I do have a few new rattles/popping noises from the right rear window area over the last 18 months with the new setup. I have also tracked the car a few times so I guess this is to be expected with the complex nature of the roof mechanism.

Thank you for your return on experiences, guys.
Just to confirm: for driving a little bit fast on country roads with sometimes a lot of bumps, you wouldn't be worried by the impact of bilstein HD on the targa roof efficiency.

I own a coupe and found the HD's too stiff for daily street driving. I have heard that the ROW M033 setup is a great setup for the street.

My top rattles a little going over bumps when it is open, I believe this is due to worn rear gate guides.
see: This link and look at the right side of that thing labeled "slot for roof axle" and notice how it is a little worn at that end. This causes the glass roof to rattle a little when fully open if I hit sharp bumps. And yes my 1.75 LPMMs help the perceived rattle issue.
Porsche has also put out an upgrade to the front axel plates. The newer front ones are a stronger metal it seems. The part number is in the TSB on Mikejs pcarworkshop.com site here It is mentioned in work procedure number 5 in the TSB.
I believe I cracked one of my axle plates on a rough patch of freeway while closing the top. Bear in mind that the previous owner had a crappy mechanic work on the top, and I had clulessly worked on the top too, and I am sure one, or both of us had at some point over-torqued the rear axle plate contributing to the failure, although others here have had them fail. I think Mikej had his crack. The plates are expensive, $250+ each If I remember.

I can't say enough positive things about the Bilstein PSS10. I just got them on last week, I have it set for 4 in rear, 3 in front, and they feel 'perfect' (as if I had just put the 'correct' shocks on my car to replace my worn US-spec) and the drop was about an inch from US spec. I went for these because of the adjustability and also had heard the HD setup was a bit (or more depending on the source) stiff without any adjustability.

I had mine crack on my original roof, so, being cheap, i had a new set cast where I added extra ribs for strength, and then machined out the pivot bushings to fit. They were totally solid after that. I now have a newer roof (made in 2000) with the latest pivots.
Cheers,
Mike
