center air vent removal

Anybody know the trick to removing the center air vent in the dash?

I have an extra vent that I'm modifying for better air flow to driver's area, and I see the tabs, but I can't get the old one out.

I've scraped my knuckles, dinged the dash border, and I'll be d_mned if it's not coming out...

Did a quick search already.
thanks,
Jim

I just did this and brok mine getting it out. Here is how you do it W/O breaking it

1. Looking at the front of the vent notice the 2 white dots on the left and right side.

2. On the inset of each white dot you will see a sqaure cutout (this is inside the vent on top)

3. There is a piece of metal in which to slide a flat bladed screwdriver in. You must do it on both sides.

4. Push down on the metal tabs and pull the vent forward.

Hope this helps. PM sent as ell.

COOL!!!!!!! Once you know how, you can do it in your sleep. It's the learning how to take the part out that is tough. Once I broke mine trying to pull it out I saw what I broke and how easy it really is to remove.

Hoe did you modify it? Mine blows 90% of the air out of one side of the double vent.

Jimq:

Pull the vent out and I bet the door is closed on 1 side. The knob you turn to open and close the door has probably come off. You can reattach it or position the door in the open position. Once you get it out it is a very simple mechanism.

The vent was the first part I broke on my car. I had assumed (incorrectly) the vent would come off with a firm downward pull like my old BMW. Without first pressing down on the tabs, pulling the vent just bends them inwards. Once that happens, I was unable to release the tab without breaking them. But once I got the vent out, it was obvious that light pressure on the 2 tabs downward will allow the vent to be pull out.

My $100 mistake.

Good timing on this thread...

On my cab, the "slits" that move up and down to direct airflow are very loose and will constantly fall down. Do I need to replace the vent or is there some type of adjustment/mod I can use to fix it? If not, is Sunset the best source for a new vent?

Chad:

I would take it out and poke around in there. You may have something loose. I would go that route 1st instead of buying a new one. The aren't killer expensive, but if you can fix it that would be better.

bringing back an old thread. I have the same issue with my center vent. Almost 100% of airflow comes out of the drivers side. Even when I close the drivers side of the center vent, I get very little airflow from passenger side of the center vent. Seems strange since it’s fed from the same tube. Any thoughts?

jim, did you get fix yours?

edit - see many posted from Nile13 who feels this behavior is normal. Anyone else verify this? Tore?

Isnt't the uneven center vent air distribution one of the special features that makes a 993?

I also thought there was an internal vane that needed adjusting. Nope, no way to have more come out the center right side.

I contemplated using a piece of black plastic and creating a flap inside to direct the flow more evenly. Never got past the planning stage.
