Default Rear Seat Defeat

So went to the Hershey Swap today with $300 in my pocket looking for a RSD. Found two and both wanted $500 and wouldn't budge. By the time I left one had already sold:

Only $500? I thought the one in my attic was worth as much as sports seats... Darn recession.

(mine is not for sale)

Cactus - I was there also - one of those was for a 964 - a black one - so it wouldn't your vehicle anyway. Keep looking - by the way I paid $800 for mine about a year ago. Also there are two different ones for the 993 - the couple is different from the one for the cab.
Additionally - I have never seen sooooo many Porsches at Hershey as I did today!

Ryan,

Good to see you. I think you should have pulled the trigger at $500, especially if they are going for $750 on Ebay. That $250 was your Hershey discount. JMHO.

Not that I saw. The best deal was Rennline 4 pedals sets for $140. I would like to see more swag there at reasonable prices. The main vendor for shirts/posters/swag was charging the full retail prices.

Just did and he's not budging either.

You too Mark! Even though i want one bad I won't spend that much for it. I will be patient and persistent and eventually end up with one at a decent price.

I just recently bought my RSD for my 993 CAB for $750. I know a lot of people who looking around for month and years at CL and then they are proud to hunt one down for $250-350. However, I was thinking if I just search 10 hours at a low $50 hourly rate for my self the higher cost are ok. It always depends what you will do with you free time. I rather drive the Porsche than endless nights searching in the internet.

Junior Noodle-- I admire your persistence & patience. As happy as we'll be when you get that magic $250 RSD, I look at lengthy searches exactly like Jack (... or passively put it in my sig block ). Best of luck with the search!

You're down with the details, but if helps any others, here's handy RL references, such as the two different parts Ralph alludes to above:

Nice timing with your thread: I just got an RSD in the mail; opened it & took this photo for your 2nd question. (It's from a fellow Rennlister. I stumbled upon an old 'for sale' listing back when the 'search' function apparently worked better.)

Hope this helps.

  • RSD from 911 prior to the 964 do NOT fit our cars! (Too short & too narrow.)
  • Cab and coupe versions are similar enough to work in both styles (difference is in how the sides of the RSD fit against the difference in rear side body panels)
  • OEM RSD are rare and currently sell in the $200-$800 range [EDIT: $500-800!]
  • Less expensive versions have often been cut or altered for speakers but this is usually repairable
  • Carpeting and vinyl or leather can be sourced to repair/ rebuild/ re-color a RSD
  • OEM RSD are priced at >$3000 from a dealer, but no orders for a new one have been filled as of the past 5 years
  • Attachment brackets/bolts/etc are still available (I obtained my hardware from Sunset but some pieces still had to come from Germany = 6 weeks for delivery)
  • RSD are heavy, but still lighter than the rear seat support and seats of a cab
  • Black is most commonly found (other colors can be VERY rare)
  • Some people have created their own RSD to varying degrees of success (I think it looks weird if you do not remove the seats)
  • The doors on a RSD are NOT the same as the glove-box door
  • There is an excellent DIY (from Howdy993) posted on p-carworkshop.com for the removal and installation of an RSD in a cab
  • There is a locking mechanism [originally in cab versions only??] that to this point, no-one has figured out how to integrate into the alarm/ immobilizer harness
  • The rear seat floor mats fit perfectly into the space left when you remove the rear seat cushions AND stick to any of the evil glue that is remaining but the seat cushion bottoms need NOT be removed to install a RSD

If I got $50/hour for searching the internet I would have been driving a TT or a GT3 by now. If a red RSD comes up at any price I'm a goner. In the meantime I can still enjoy my RSDless coupe.
