Wow! a 993 owner giving compliments to a pcar that:

1. Is not a 911.

2. Not air cooled.

The pitch forks and shovels with them torches are coming now. Seriously, are you looking at a "S" Tony?

I had an early '97 Boxster. It was a great, very reliable and fun car to own and drive, way more "Porsche-like" than the souless 996 that I replaced it. What a mistake that was.

The Boxster reminds me of a significantly updated 914-6, which was also very much a Porsche.

Jack - can you expand on that a bit? It seemed strange to read that given the parts sharing (interior, etc) between the two cars.

A Boxster with a manual ... I thought there was some law that required a Tiptronic ....

Seriously, there are some nice examples available in the $15 - 20K range ... an excellent deal on the performance value scale...

Boxter's are at least mid engined and have a personality. 996's have no soul.

Dealer let me take an '05 Boxster for a test run (on my own) last summer. They are great cars. A few more hp, like an S, and they are even better.

Very simple...the Boxster's driving dynamics were those of a real sports car. No, it wasn't as fast as the 996, but it was quick enough, it was more agile, and the exhaust note under WOT at 5,000-6,000 RPM was just beautiful. Mine was a 5-speed, BTW.

The 996 felt (and looked) "heavy", the shifter (6 speed manual) was very sloppy as compared to the Boxster's, and it was much quieter. It was so refined and characterless that sometimes I forgot I was driving a Porsche. It reminded me a lot of my old 928...a high speed tourer, more 'GT' than 'sports'. It wasn't a bad car. It was dead reliable and very comfortable. It just didn't excite me the way the Boxster or an older 911 did.

Understand that I am an old school Porsche owner (see my sig)...the only modern Porsches I would consider owning would be a GT3 (too expensive for me) or a Boxster/Cayman. To me, the latter two personify what sports cars are, as long as the option list is kept short.

It's too bad that Porsche A.G. has purposely stifled the Boxster and Cayman from a motorsports perspective. If that were not the case, perhaps the "chick car" image thing that seems to bother some guys wouldn't have occured. If I could afford a second Porsche, I'd get another Boxster without hesitation.

I have a 2001 Boxster S with a 6 speed. It and the 993 are two very differant cars; both great, just differant. I am putting Fister's mufflers on it in hopes of getting some sound out of it.

They're not. Bought mine new with a sticker price over 60K.. it just turned 17,000 miles and I would be lucky to get 23K for it. I plan on keeping it for many years so no worries, but still....

At the time we were shopping we looked at the 996 cabs. I found that the S shared a lot of parts with the 996 and I like the mid engine. Now, 8 years later I am happy with the choise.

I think Rector out here has one of the orange ones, asking low $50's. Kinda like those 550 edition '04's. Could have bought one a year ago from a specialty dealer for high $20's (had some miles), but all the owners I see attempting to sell are $10-15K higher on asking. Any wonder they still own them?

Back to the point of "ooh, it's not a 911 and it's water cooled". You know, 10 years ago we all said the same about brand-spanking new 993 owner who showed up at the track (from a spending money perspective). And as old and trashed as most of them are now, a decent 944 turbo is a helluva competent car.
