Gas pedal technique not working, CEL is on.
Hello all,
I just picked up a 993 C4 (My 4th 911, first 993). Drove it for a week on the PO's tags, finalized the sale, got my own tags, and on that very day the CEL came on. I tried the gas pedal technique, and got no response. I held the gas pedal down with the key on and the CEL never started blinking. Any ideas why this may be happening? Is there a Wide Open Throttle switch that might not be working? Thanks |
I thought that only worked on 1995 OBD1 cars. I've actually never even tried it.

The PO was nice enough to include the factory repair manual with the car.
The gas pedal procedure was in that manual. It didn't mention exclusivity in terms of model years. Anyone know? It is the 993 manual, printed in 1993. Thanks |
Just take it to a local auto parts store, & have them read it for free.

You REALLY need to get and WRITE DOWN the code(s) that have tripped this CEL.
Note, for anyone to be able read the codes, with a code scanner, the immobilizer needs to be OFF. Gerry |

p.s. this method apparently does NOT work on 1996+ cars:
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ml#post2007271 p.p.s. Kris- you may want to update your sig so it's clear what year car you have, which helps for questions like this. |

Sorry, forgot to mention the year. I assumed all the 993s were the same in this regard. Yea, I was referring to the 1400 page workshop manual. I don't have the manual in front of me, but I think it's in the "diagnosis" book, on the last page of the DME section. Thanks for the help! |
That procedure works only with ODBI cars (1995 and older), for a ODBII car (96 and newer) you need to use a scanner.
Since you got a 13 year old car, invest on a $70 ODBII scanner, you'll use it more than once. |

Well.....scan tool off course!!! Just wrap it up for her on a nice red paper and surprise her!

Will the Scan tool also reset the light? What is the model to buy? Advice appreciated.
|
Yes, but then you'll have "un-readied" the "ready" codes which if not reset by inspection time will cause you to fail.....You don't want to fail in California or the air quality Nazis will be all over you :D
