OT: $300 laptop needed
Hello,
I'm looking for a pretty basic laptop with 512 MB+ RAM, 40 GB+ HD, 1.7 GHz+ speed, CDRW for $300 or less.
Let me know, via email ideally, if you have an extra machine gathering dust.
Thanks much.

If anything, get at least 1 gig of RAM---unless your just typing and no internet.
Those PCs should be a dime a dozen out there.

Chuck,
These guys might be too far from you, but I would try Computers, Inc. in Baltimore. I just came from their store and they have two laptops, one for $300 (Dell, Windows XP Home, 2.4 gigahertz Intel Celeron, 20GB hard drive) and one for $250 (Dell, Windows XP, 1000 meaghertz Intel Pentium III, 48GB hard drive). I've bought a refurbed computer from them and was very happy with their price and super-firiendly service. Talk to Warren.

Again, dont go less than 1 gig (1024) of memory. I'd go 2 gig if were me.
PC sales from 1992-2000 (I worked for Gateway) and RAM/Memory is one place that one shouldnt cut short change youself. It will save you $50-$100 in fustration in a very short period of time. Of course back in my days of Laptop sales it was $1400 to go from 16meg to 32 megs of ram!!

Thanks guys for all of your suggestions. This is a second computer for us. I'm trying not to overthink it, but I also don't want to go in and do any upgrades that could double my $300 outlay!

my kids acer suddenly won't turn on yesterday, so it will be going back for repairs. This after exactly 1 year, not sure if I would buy another though. Then again my dell is on its 4 hard drive; it luvs to eat drives so I'm chilling him with a turbo laptop cooler.

a little above your price, but almost current specs

If you're not in a hurry, prices are only coming down.

thinkpadforum.com and look in the marketplace section for people getting rid of their old thinkpads like an old T40 or T42. They are tanks and in your price range.

Chuck, please trust me on the Mac.
A 4 yr old 1ghz iBook with 512MB of memory still operates as well as any new $500 PC with a gig, and still already comes with great software. OSX and iLife.
Not only that, you can use it for a couple years and still get $200 for it.
