Focal or other component speaker sizing
O.K. I know this has been hashed over more than a few times and I have used the search function but I'm still having trouble figuring out what speakers to buy. I have a '95 C2 with the hi-fi option. As such, I'd like to get three-ways to install behind the original mid and sub enclosure. As far as the tweet goes I guess the Focal tweeter will mount directly to the stock bracket - no cutting required? Anyway, does anyone have an exact model number I could look up or are most people purchasing a 2-way kit and leaving the mid empty. I plan on using an Alpine PDX 4.150 located under the pax seat ( remove old amp). Also, is the DSP from the original hi-fi system underneath the seat as well? If anyone sees a glaring fault in this plan, I would love to hear about it before I start plunking down some serious cash.

i had 2-way component focals running from an alpine unit when I bought the car, and it sounded good. Putting them on an amp was even more amazing. I almost want to say you don't need to go through the hassle of doing the amp unless you are trying to get a certain amount of bass out of the system.

The DynAudio system 340 will fill the stock Hi-FI pods

Thanks for the response! If Dynaudio is the perfect fit, I'd better start saving! Flatsix911, what did you use for the rears? thanks, Paul
Once you remove the door panels, you can either use the HI-Fi speaker wave guides or replace them with a custom enclosure like I did.
Photos of the original stock HI-Fi speaker wave guides below...
The 7 & 3 inch mid woofers are a perfect fit and the tweeter can be mounted in the stock grille location or just use the grilles Dynaudio provided.
The system is driven by an old school Nakamichi amplifier with an additional sub behind the front seat and the Hi-Fi rear enclosures with modified Dynaudio components.

That Alpine PDX 4.150 is a very nice light amp. The Dyns are amazing but if you want to spend a little less $$ you could look at Rainbow speakers. They have a great sound and the kickBase is impressive out of the 6.5's. http://www.rainbow-audio.de/ Or the Hybrids are also very nice. http://www.hybrid-audio.com/index.htm
I think most Sound Quality Installers would suggest not running rear speakers in a stereo set up.

Dear SuperUser,
Thanks for the info. I have to admit, I've never heard of either Rainbow or Hybrid. They both look awesome though. Can I assume the the systems I'm looking for are a 61/2" or 7" bass and a 4" mid-range speaker like the Legatia™ L641-3 three-way component system?
Thanks again everyone for your help.

I also have a 95 C2 and just recently had my whole system ripped out and replaced with Focal components. The installer himself is a 993 owner and has done a ton of these. My budget was 500 for everything including installation. I think i spent 480.
The doors are three piece 3-ways P.O.S and were removed and replaced with the focal Polyglass series two piece, 2-way shown below. So the old stock midrange speaker hole was left empty. They used soundproofing in the door panel as well. The two peice 2-way's fit in perfectly with the stock enclosure as far as I could tell by watching him.
The rear deck enclosure looks like it would fit a 4x6 but it does not. Besides, the installer said the geometry of 4x6 speakers is not as good as the perfect circular geometry of the round 4" speaker. We used Focal 1-peice 2-way as shown.
The fitting on the rear deck also used the stock enclosures, but he had to cut off the speaker's standoffs so that they would fit flush, and he used some adhesive to attach the speaker to the stock frame. Its still fully reversable, but heaven knows why you would want to.... We left the soundproofing off the rear deck, because he said we didn't want it to sound like a water cooled 996 :-).
I/m very satisfied with my sound, its bright and clear, and the Focal's dont need much power to get them ringing. I have a 4x75 watt amp under my passenger seat and it quite enough.

Yeah sorry - but I tend to be short with words on my blackberry
Focals for sure, I had them in my last C2S without a sub (under recommendation from Rod Birch) - and he was right. I eneded up dynamat'ing the doors as the focals were in danger of shaking my door mirrors out!
Totally agree with those guys who say that its not a great sound stage (a 993 interior that is), but I like tunes and I like to hear them pretty clearly when I'm on a long drive. Keep it simple - enjoy!
