To resurrect the old thread - FlatSix, could you please elaborate on how you got teh OEM tweeters out and how you installed the DynAudio tweeter in the pod?

Is the stock amp that bad? I know the speakers deteriorate but for such a small car a dedicated amp, even the stock one, shouldn't need to be replaced unless its broken?

Yes, the stock amp is that bad. It's like putting R-compound tires on a daily driven Yugo.

Now, can anyone tell me which tweeters they managed to install in the stock angled pods and how? I got the pods off the door, tweeter with plastic surround out of the pod. I have a set of a/d/s 5.25" midrange drivers and crossovers. But one of the a/d/s tweeters is dead and they are too big anyway, so I'm looking for appropriate tweets.

There are also some Focal 130A available, but I have not heard them. Anyone has experience with 130A series?

The tweeter pods were easy ... just left the car with the installer for the afternoon and it was done...

Seriously, the front sound stage is excellent now and the sub-woofer and rear fill complete the range.

FlatSix, do you have a picture of your door without the door panel installed so I can get an idea of how the speakers were mounted?
Thanks.

I have a cab with the hi-fi option, is the dynaudio 340 the most cost-effective way to get a three-way speaker set-up in the front doors? If so I'll buy it....

I have no interest in a separate sub, I just want a pure replacement for the stock set-up. I wouldn't want to give up a single inch of room in the car for a sub.

My main interest is in listening to loud talk radio while blasting down the highway with the top down -- I can't do that now.

I'm also OC and just don't like the idea of leaving out a mid speaker that was designed to be there.....

I would think that Dynaudio would be a gigantic overkill in this case. They are very nice... but there are a lot of very nice speakers for that application for third the price.

Also, you will have to figure out what to use for a crossover. You would not want to use OEM crossovers with Dynaudio. Which means replacing the amp. Which means probably replacing the head... you see where this is going.

Actually, the Dynaudio automotive 3way kit has a crossover included. While the Dyn set is attractive looking, from an fidelity piont of view there are two way arrangement's better suited to the interior space of the 993.

I understand that Dynaudio includes the cross over, but it has to be installed somewhere (not very difficult to find space) and run off of something (that's not as trivial, as full range signal is not coming out of that atrocious amp as far as I know.

So I'm advocating a balanced approach and thinking forward. Simply replacing speakers will not happen.

I understand the amp is not good enough to drive a subwoofer, which many people choose to add. It was never designed to do that.

But if you're not asking it to drive a subwoofer, it should have adequate power, no?

I want to keep the stock head (Becker 210), I have no issues with it.

The Nokia audio amplifier in our cars was designed to satisfy a cost metric first and fidelity second, I would believe. A time honored approach starts with the stock Becker 210, however downstream an upgrade to an audio amp/eq combo and suitable two way speaker arrangement; 6” midbass, tweeter pod, leaving the (OEM HiFi option) suedo midrange place-card empty. In the end you’ll have freqency control, higher SPL, lower distortion overall and the stock look of the Becker 210. The Becker 220 … is a better sounding OEM Radio/CD unit and with the appropriate face change can be used in the 993.

I spoke to a very reputable stereo installer today and he told me there is no way to mount a 3 way speaker in the doors of a car with the hi-fi option; he said the tweeter space was too small. He said he's done almost 100 993's and has vast experience.

He strongly suggested a 2 way setup (because it's "the only option", preferably with a new amp, but said I would experience significant improvement with the old amp still in place.

Flat six, this seems to contradict your installer, I'm in SoCal, can you (or anyone else) refer me to someone in the San Diego area? I'd prefer a shop that really knows 993's.

TIA

He is absolutely, positively full of crap. There is no other way to put it.

PS. Anything can be installed anywhere, pretty much. In case of 993 with Hi-Fi installing 3-way speakers is so routine, there's nothing to really discuss.
