Don't mean to hijack, but +3 on Omega Seamaster. Bought mine when I still had my boat, which seemed like it made some sense.

The "5 ton elephant in the living room" that no one's talking about here are all the Rolex knockoffs out there. That situation has pretty much killed that brand for me. Real Rolexes are unquestionably fine watches, but I'd never personally wear one one of their more common models due to all the fakes. But I'm slightly weird anyway, so...

Hi Denis,

I appreciate the spirit of your post. All I can say is that I am 100% honest in this opinion. Whether that opinion is well founded is of course open to our interpretation of the information that is available to us and our ability to analyse it. You imply that I have no education on this point. I have tried and do have some. Whenever an established opinion challenges the accepted order it will always be shot down. It certainly should be challenged but it should be looked at with an open and inquiring mind. I would therefore ask you to read some of what I have based my opinion on:

Denis,
Thanks for the great information. I was thinking of getting a Jaeger in rose gold, but after your Rolex info, i'm a little nervous. I'm amazed I never heard of clorine/some water could change the color of rose gold. Thanks Again.

Mike,

You are safe with a JLC !
I own a Master Compressor Geo and it is a stunning watch.
Keeps good time and is well made.
No doubt, JLC is among the best !

IIRC, it's a few hundred $ a pop at an authorized Rolex service center. That includes a new crystal. The last time I had mine done it needed a few worn out parts replaced, so it was more.

Servicing costs, whether Rolex or Porsche, are never going to be inexpensive. And considering there are a lot more Rolexes than Porsches, and a lot more Porsche technicians than Rolex certified watchmaker's it's a bargain. I tell everyone repairing watches to raise their prices; every watchmaker I know has months of backlog of repair. Raise your prices 30-40% and you'll still have a month or more backlog, you'll just be making a better living.

So how much is the regular service on these things?

I have GMT II that's about 5 years old and was thinking of having it serviced.
I just sent my GMT II in for service. They will call in about 2 weeks with est . But starts at $550 then $750 and next was $1150. They need to look at it to see how much work is required. My watch was about 10+ years old.

I've got three 'opens' for staff, and in NYC it's going to take over 100K to get anyone that's pretty good. $2,000 referall fees to any existing employee who recommends someone who gets hired too.

Another very happy Submariner here. Looks and works great after 5 years of ownership as my daily. Swim with it several times a week through the summer and have made somewhere around 50+ dives with it. Impossible to scratch that crystal....

Also have an Omega Seamaster; like the watch but it has required service after 2 years

The problem is that chlorine attacks gold. I wear my Submariner in the pool and the ocean,--and my GMT II (with SS and 18 K gold) stays out of the water for the most part.
