Drilled airbox

thanks bill! but I drive or have to drive very slow due to the road conditions.
my average rev is merely 2-3.5k. many a time, the engine fan has to be switched on by itself because the car isn't moving fast enough in the traffic and the engine room is boiling....
I just occasionally give the car a stretch on early sunday mornings.
that's why I am concerned about the negative impact of the hot air inside.

I bought a stock lid and did this using a Dremel with a cutting wheel. Great sound, no additional HP. Have to be careful not to drive in the rain with it installed, as the air filter can get wet. I kept my original unmodified lid for those days.

And yeah, it's a "sound" improvement And no negatives that I can think of, nor I can attest to, after having made large rectangular openings in mine over 60K miles ago. Whether small holes, large, or box openings, what you get is extra intake roar, which is nice, unless you want a Lexus

Mine has the factory motorsound and it works great for what it is designed for-more sound. If you are concerned about heat make sure the engine underpanel is removed (rear most bottom cover.) That is a must where I live and was only put on to keep the Swiss authorities happy for noise control.

With these driving conditions, it seems like you are slowly killing your car, or at least forcing an earlier-than-usual top end rebuild. Can you keep it between 3K and 4K with an occasional visit to the red line? Or maybe supplement with a Civic etc. to subject to this nasty traffic and leave the 993 to "Sunday mornings" only? Or maybe a 996- best of both worlds!
