regearing options
dear friends
after some maths, I think I have a couple of reasonable options of regearing my 993 for ocasional track use....
1.- 1st: 2,833; 2nd: stock; 3rd: 1,550; 4rd: 1174 (I understand that 3rd and 4th should be changed together)
2.- 1st: stock; 2nd: 2,375; 3rd: 1,789; 4rd: 1381
3.- 8:32 R&P; 1st: stock; 2nd: stock; 3rd: 1,550; 4rd: 1174
thanks a lot for your help

In a 993, most transmissions have 1st and 2nd integral to the main shaft. To change one you must change both. Regearing is an expensive proposition (roughly $1k per gear). If you are not a very experienced driver where you know the current gearing to be a significant problem, I would not recommend doing it.

I think that it depends greatly on what you want to do with your car. If you are not going to be doing a lot of high speed driving and you simply wish to have better acceleration on the track then I would try going to the 8:32 ring and pinion with no gear changes first and see how you like that.
Keep in mind that this is going to shorten your entire gearbox, so first and second might seem a bit too short, but most people do not seem to have an issue with this.
This option should allow you to have better acceleration, yet be able to maintain a decent cruising gear in the 6th position. If you find that you still need a shorter closer set up then consider working on the 3rd thru 6th gearsets to get what you are looking for.
Pricing on gears is somewhat prohibitive for many as they typically run 700 to 1000 per gearset, but if you decided that you wish to go this direction, let me know and I will be happy to help with getting a gearchart together and gears out to you, we stock a great many ratios here.
Hope that this helps you some, feel free to get in touch with me with any questions that you might have.
