Matt:
I am not sure why you PM'd me. I and many others think CarFax is simply a seller's marketing tool, tho if it shows on CarFax it is probably true. Just cause CarFax shows title clean IMHO means nothing

Maybe Im thinking of that other yellow 80 SC bodied one from back a few months ago. It was a really bad example of a Porsche.

This one is probably different. My bad, I deleted the post.

When I said it had a clean carfax I went back and check my documents and it's actually carcheck. The icon for carcheck was on the auction page when I bought it on ebay. It looked almost exactly like the carfax tab so in my haste I did a carcheck thinking it was carfax. I know, I'm a dumbass but I've learned a ton in the past 8 wks and I'll do it different next time. If it looks too good to be true it probably is.

So how were your probs resolved? This guy I bought it from still maintains that it has never been wrecked to his knowledge and his carfax was clean. He's a liar and a good one. The funny thing is, I usually research everything I buy to the nth degree b/4 pulling the trigger. This was an impulse buy and I got burned. Now for damage control. Can I get out of this without losing my ***. The car is a 96 Polar Silver C2 tiptronic. Black supple leather interior and the paint looks pretty, actually very good(it should it's new). It's pretty much stock except for the radio. 67K miles.

I ran AutoCheck and no mention of accident however the car has been in CA, VA, FL and lastly KY.

The suspicious part though is the mileage on 3/9/2005 was 66,318 and next mileage report on 1/7/08 was 66,812.

It's a Polar Silver over black supple leather 96 C2 Tiptronic with 67Kmiles. Has CEL issues and now we know had been wrecked. I know, you don't have to tell me, I'm a dumbass. I usually research all my purchases to the nth degree b/4 I buy but this was Xmas day evening and I had been with my family the night b/4 and my bro in-law who has an 05 GT3 was talking P-cars with me all night and he knew I'd been wanting one so I got all fired up and found this one on ebay with 50 mins remaining and thought I'd have little competition on Xmas night so I did the carcheck ( thinking it was a carfax) I know... dumbass again, and I pulled the trigger. That said, I want to try and break even on this sucker. My title does not say salvage and neither did the one he gave me so I don't buy that but I do know it has been wrecked.

When I was shopping I ran a bunch of 993 VINs and found records under both 0 and O on several cars. On one, a NYC accident appeared under 0 or O, I can't recall which while virtually all the other records with under the correct O/0.

Not sure if this was intentional or just a typo, it does seem to happen a bit.

The title said 66,318 when he bought it in 05. He told me he bought it for his wife and she didn't drive it because she liked driving her Cayenne Turbo cuz it's easier to haul the kids around. He had the car 3 yrs and put under 400 miles on it. He also has 2 930's and an 08 C4S in his garage. The mileage seemed plausible because the guy has 5 Porsche's as well as other cars. This was by far his oldest car and he immediately replace it with an 01 911 TT less than a week after I bought the 993. As fishy as the mileage seems it jives when I look at the few maintenance records he had. What likely happened is he either bought it wrecked or wrecked it and paid cash for repairs to keep his insurance from canceling him.
So the carcheck you saw is the same as the one I saw less the Ky info. I live in Ky and that the latest activity on the carcheck.

I'm subscribing to this thread because I'll be in the market for a 993 real soon after selling my M3 cabrio and need to know the do/don't and what's going around. Good luck.

Maybe you'll just have to keep it and drive it. There are worse things....

Three observations:

1) Good God, when I'm playing around with $20K plus, I step up and pay the $30 for genuine Carfax. WTF is "Carcheck"? Have you even done this much yet?

2) Your buyer may be trying to mess with you by equating "any" accident with "salvage." He needs to know that's not the same thing. Actually, there can be seriously messed up cars without salvaged titles, but that's another discussion.

3) Getting burned on your personal dream car (98% of us here) is one thing, but I can't help but snicker at somebody getting burned when trying to flip one.
