Wanted: 993 Targa
Hello all.
I didn't want my first post to this forum to be a "wanted" plea, but I've found little else to contribute. My questions are all answered (so far) by searching the archives.
I'm in the market for a 993 Targa in good condition.
I'll consider anything, but that's my current wish list.
I was close to buying a 1996 for sale in San Francisco, but it had been hit on the passenger door, and the repair paint was a terrible mis-match. Even the dealer admitted it.
Last week, I came within an inch of buying the 96 Targa at Victory, but I was clearly not getting the truth about the car. The PPI I had done at a nearby dealership was pretty encouraging, but it still didn't jive with the description I was told. Without being able to see it in person, I had to walk away. Shame, because I think it's probably a good car. Just no way to tell, given the way that dealership is run. I may yet end up flying out there to look at it.
I'm monitoring craigslist, cars.com, and autotrader daily, but the pickings are slim. Maybe somebody here is ready to give theirs up and move on to their next p-car?! Here's hoping.

Partial carography:
1964 Pontiac GTO convertible (sold)
1966 Pontiac GTO coupe (sold)
1972 Datsun 240Z, modded (stolen, crashed)
1989 944 Turbo S (sold)
1972 BMW 3.0 CSi (sold)
Several motorcycles. Still have a Triumph and an Aprilia

- Must be 6-speed
- Greatly prefer the classic silver-over-black color combination
- Prefer stock to heavily modded, but will consider anything
- "Well-loved and maintained" is more important than "low miles"
- Would be great to find one in California

Is there anything else?
Seriously Matt - Welcome, and good luck with your search. Take your time and don't settle for less than what you want (need?). I searched for several months for the right Targa, and finally found the right car at an awesome price less than 2 hours from my house.
Seek and ye shall find.........

I'm sure you've checked out the local one on Craigslist in Marin the guy is soooooooo proud of @ $55K. But the last ad I saw was down to $50K. Maybe waving cash in front of him knocks him back to earth?

Yes, I've seen that listing on various sources bouncing between $49,000 and $53,000. One posting of it shows photographs that reveal bumper stickers, a tweaked piece of trim, a funky ride height, and what looks like about two weeks worth of laundry heaped in the back seats. I THINK Carfax had a question about a nonsequential odometer reading too, if I remember right.
Of the cars I've scouted, it's the least desirable, and is asking the highest price.
My wife reasons that it may not actually be for sale, but maybe the guy is shopping it around to demonstrate that he's trying to sell it. Trying to hype the value for a divorce lawyer, etc. Obviously I have no idea.
I don't know the guy, haven't talked to him, and don't mean to offend if it happens to be somebody here. But at that price, the car can't realistically be called "for sale". The "no offers" text as much as says so too.

Here are another couple to consider:
http://www.sloancars.com/vs1/detail.asp?CarID=233
(IIRC, he also has a Polar Silver and Black Targa as well)
Here is a place that usually has good 993 Targas:

Great choice Leanit. I was looking for a coupe for two months and found my Targa and I am very happy owning it. Take your time and find one that meets your requirments.
