Cost of LWFW & Clutch?
What do you think is a fair price for the RS clutch & lwfw installed
in a 993 C4S. Anyone have experience with Powertech in Rockaway NJ? |
$1500 for parts, $800 for installation.

Good question, and if I might ask, who makes the LWFWs and are some better than others for street use? Sorry, don't mean to hijack, figured it's kind of along the same vein. :)

Yeah, I'm not sure about a C4(S) with the accompanying torque tube. I'm pretty sure my mechanic charges $800 and did not have to drop the engine to do it. |

FWIW, I'm not a keyboard mechanic. I was a paid Porsche wrench part-time in college and have done more 911 engine drops than I can remember. And any tech who takes two days to pull a 911 motor is (pun intended) pulling your leg.

The previous owner of my car had an estimate of 10 hours to change the rear seal which should be about the same as changing a clutch (if not a bit more).

Thanks for the discussion. I'm waiting with great anticipation to see who can bring this home. Seems like the car being a C4S could be a factor, or not.
It would be nice if the engine doesnt get droped. I'll ask next time I speak to the shop that quoted the job:confused: |
I have a C4 and just had the LWF and turbo clutch plate installed by VB at Vortex in Tampa. Rick, an outstanding wrench, did not pull the engine but it took a vast majority of the day to accomplish the job. $1450 parts/$800 labor (basic parts only)- but I also had to replace both rear lower control arms and get a quick alignment which added to the labor time. I'll post more info and pics in another thread.

I haven't pulled a 993 engine (thankfully) of the probably 250-300 911 engines I've removed over the years. BUT on RWD 964 a/c p/s cars, if it took me more than two hours, I'd have to be slacking. (I think an hour and 15 minutes was the record on the no a/c, no p/s RSA at the track one time.) Add in some extra for disconnecting the AWD stuff. It ain't that difficult or time consuming.........

Pulling the rear suspension cross member does indeed add time. Some shops are including alignment costs and time in their quote.
There are advantages to pulling to whole shebang as at clutch time, other maintenance can and should be performed. Doing such maintenance at this time may allow a watered down labor total increasing value of the job. |
