4 Myths...Busted
 

Ok, gentlemen...Jordan (formerly of MOM, and a real cool cat) was gracious enough this weekend to meet with me and take me for a spin in his car. I have come away with 4 very strong opinions.

1. The LWF "gear lash" was barely perceptible. When we could detect it, it sounded more like a BB in a coffe CUP. Conclusion: When it comes time to replace my clutch, the LWF package is going in.

2. 18in wheels ride no worse than 17 inch. I'm all original on 17, and he's got massive tires on 18's. His car rides just as "comfortable" as mine. Conclusion: If there is a difference in ride quality between 17 and 18 inch wheels, my ass couldn't feel it.

3. PSS9's set to "hard" don't ride like a covered wagon. We went zipping through some twisties with plenty of bumps in the roads and the car moved right through them without compressing our spines. Conclusion: Even with the taut suspension, the ride remains supple. His car carves up the corners like a slot car.

4. Fat, and I mean FAT tires will fit in NB 993. He's got 295's out back, fenders are NOT rolled, and he still has a smidgen of clearance...i.e., no rubbing. I couldn't believe it so I felt up under the wheel well to make sure. Conclusion: NB's can handle big rubber out back.

Fitting wide tires back there without fender rolling is also dependent on ride height, negative camber and car-to-car variations.

Whatever he did, he did correctly because he has some MEATS on that thing. And it looks to be at almost CUP car height. I can't remember the RL'ers handle, but he has a beautiful arena red C2 with BBS RS-GTs, with Super Cup exhaust, and he tracks it. I think Jordans car is just as low and I couldn't believe how that thing moved through the twisties.

PSS9s when I put them on my 993 made an enormous improvement in ride quality and performance. The PSS9 is a progressive spring, so they offer good ride comfort with excellent handling.

I've had a LWF in a 964 and the amount of noise varied. Some times it was louder than other, but I didn't care. :D

My view on the PSS9 - the dual spring keeps it OK on "1" for light bumps under normal driving...but once you get past the "soft" spring...the cavities come out.

Interesting observations.

The noise from my LWF is easily heard, but I love it - adds character to a sports car in MHO.

On the difference between 17s and 18s, there are a number of variables so it very much depends on the whole suspension package and tires. My previous 96 Targa riding on new OE Boges and ROW MO30 suspension pack with RS anti-roll bars and PS2s was bone jaring compared to my 96 Carrera when it rode on stock suspension, old Boges, 18s and Dunlops.

Dave...the car is simply stunning :bowdown: what size wheels and tires are you running?

I have 285s on mine (19" wheels though). The fenders haven't been rolled and I have never had an issue with them rubbing.

FWIW, I could not get these 245/295 Michelin PS2s to work in my NB (RS ride height, -1.8 deg camber) on 18x 8 ET50 & 18 x 10 ET 65 BBS RS-GTs. Fronts were okay with some minor rubbing on the fender liner. But the rears gave me less than a pinky's worth of clearance without rolling the fender. I've dropped down to 235/275 Kumho Ecsta MXs (should arrive in the next few days).

Those pics where taken upon return from a weekend at Mid Ohio. I still had the Hoosiers on. The wheels are BBS RSGT 8X18 ET50 and 10X18 ET65. Completely standard 18" wheels for the NB. The tires are 225/40/18 front and 285/30/18 rear. I have had 245/35/18 Hoosier fronts on as well. There is oodles of room in the front. I rolled the fenders in the rear. I run neg. 1.5 deg. camber all around so that helps a little. With the PSS9s you can run with even a wider wheel as long the offset is a little larger. Normally I run the standard 265/35's in the rear with a 5 mm spacer on my turbo twist hollows.

I thought 17" were standard. No? :corn:
