Default Tire sizes for new wheels 18x8.5 & 18x11

Just got a new set of wheels for my '96 993 C4S. Now looking for tires. The wheels are 18x8.5 ET 56mm and 18x11 ET 45mm.

I searched the archives and saw two different recommendations:

225/40/18 and 285/30/18

235/40/18 and 295/30/18

Which is better for a 8.5" front and 11" rear wheel on my AWD C4S?

I have been told that the max width rim for a 285 is a 10.5, but I have seen wider on them, the reason i was given was that the 295 will give you more cover over kerbing the rims, but I can not see the little extra affecting this that much

I would go
235 or 245 f
295-315 rear

You got wide rims, why not fill them with wide rubber? I run 235/295 with no issues on 996tt wheels.

I'm running PS/2's 235/295 on 8.5" & 11" wheels and lowered to bottom of RoW +5mm. No issues or rubbing.

Just feel the size differance between the two tires is to large 235 315 would have liked to keep it closer to a factory spec gap.

235/295 is the perfect size for your wheels IMO. Unless you've got a turbo, bigger tires in the rear might slow you down. 245 in the front will likely rub on the liner. Also, if you stick with the mid to lower range of tire size for your rim size, the tires will be more responsive.

I have 9/11 rims with 245/315 tires right now. If I were to buy tires again, I'd get what I recommended above.

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like 235/40/18 and 295/30/18 are most recommended in this most recent survey.

Time to hunt down some tires...

Will a 285 fit on those 10.5" rims? If so, that would be my choice, along with a 235 tire. Remember that a 295/30-18 will be a taller tire than a 285/30-18 and can, hypothetically, affect performance, if it makes that much of a difference to you. By putting a larger tire up front, you can offset some of the understeer that is inherent in the AWD.

Good point Mark.

Make sure when you're shopping for tires that you match the overall size and try to stay within the OE specs of 25". You don't want a diviation of greater than ~4% between fronts and rears and frankly, anything larger than 25.5 will look off.

I'm running 235/295 on these same rims on my car, and they do not rub at ROW height nor put too much strain on the coupler ... enjoy

I found 1 nice set of rims on Ebay for sale.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=150204585091
They are 8"x18" front and 11"x18" rear. I am curious that the standard front rim should be 8" or 8.5".

they are of the 996, they do fit the 993 widebodys with no modifications (a couple of guys on here have them fitted), the std rim size of a 993 turbo is 8x18 and 10x18, the 996 had 11x18 rears.
