I'm not much of a DIY type, but starting to get into it and with each task I'm building confidence......all thanks to Rennlist. (P.S. I don't have to use broom sticks anymore to hold up my engine hatch and bonnet either)

What did it look like before you cleaned it and has it made any difference?

Cheers,

Mike

That is the first "port and polish" job I've ever seen on an ISV ... looks good!

Great job Mark -

How often do others clean the ISV?
I have cleaned it once, but just curious what others think.

Idle seemed OK prior. Didn't know if it need done or not, but I'm doing a huge laundry list of stuff (with some great local help from some wrenchers) as I just clicked over 60K. Everything you would expect on a 60K service and more.

Anyway, the thing was total black inside. I wasn't sure how the thing is supposed to function and I was cleaning it with WD40 & Q tips. The little gate thingy keep closing so I assumed it was supposed to do that.

Then after several flushs......bam it breaks loose and starts jiggling back and forth like I now realized it shoud do.

Soooo...good thing I did it. Drove it today and am in a dilemma. Must be in my head but the car seems smoother taking off from a dead stop and more responsive up around 4,000 rpms.

But its a Idle Stability Valve, so I assume it does nothing but keep the idle steady when the car is just idling while not engaged...correct?

Please enlighten me.

I had exactly the same experience a couple of years ago. ISV was totally frozen, then with enough carb cleaner all of a sudden it broke free. Doesn't actually change your idle much, but makes a noticeable difference in how easily the car takes off from a stop. I think that is actually what it is supposed to improve, so I'm not really sure why the ISV moniker.

Ok, totally overcast, rainy, dreary day here today in Cincinnati and I got nothing going on. I might as well check mine out. No idea where it's located on the engine though. Can anyone enlighten me with a pic or description on location and removal?

Default ISV Job

Here you go Ron. Much easier to get at in a '95 but should not be bad for you either. Just a few more parts to remove. Have fun!

Thumbs up

Nice job Mark! Small DIYs after small DIYs you'll finish with an engine drop just by curiosity and a few "while you're in there"...
